Why Link Your Account?

  • Publish your ChefTalk activity on your Facebook wall and activity feed to share with your friends
  • Easily invite your Facebook friends to join the community

How To Link Your Facebook Account To Your ChefTalk Account

  1. Navigate to your profile page by clicking the "My Profile" tab.
  2. Below your avatar, you will see a few buttons.  One is the "Link Account Settings" button.  Click here.
  3. On the next page, you will be asked to log into Facebook.  Click the "Login to Facebook" button.
  4. A popover will appear asking for your Facebook credentials.  Log in with the email address and password you use to log into Facebook.
  5. Click "Connect" on the popover.  Your ChefTalk account will now be linked to your Facebook account, preserving Your List, your reviews, your forum posts, etc.  After clicking "Connect" you will be taken to this Facebook Tutorial.
  6. On your logged in home page, you will see you are still identified with your original ChefTalk name.  You'll also notice a message to remind you that for the best performance, make sure to log in with your Facebook credentials from now on by clicking the Connect via Facebook link rather than just entering your user name and password in the conventional fields. Even more ideally, if you log in to Facebook and click the "Remember Me" checkbox there when you do, you will be kept logged in to both sites seamlessly.

For New Users:

Creating A New Account

  1. On the logged out page, you'll see the area to enter your user name and password to log in.  Below that, you'll see the link to "Connect with Facebook."  Click here.
  2. A popover will appear asking you to enter your Facebook credentials (or in other words, your log in information for Facebook - your email address and Facebook password).  If you are already signed into Facebook, you will not need to do this as it will already be detected.
  3. On the next page, you will see two options.  You will be able to create a brand new ChefTalk account with your Facebook account, or you can link your two existing accounts.  You will want to create a new account with your Facebook credentials.  Click "New Account."
  4. On the next page, you are welcome to add products to Your List.  When you're done, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "Save."
  5. You will be then taken to your new home page where you will see you will now be identified around the site with your Facebook credentials.
  6. From now on, always log in with your Facebook credentials by clicking Connect via Facebook in the top right corner of all pages.  If you use Facebook's "Remember Me" function, you will automatically be logged into ChefTalk.

What does "Facebook User (Private)" mean?

As you're poking around the site, you'll see a few different kinds of user names.

  1. Normal users like XYZchef or ILoveCooking: These users have registered directly with ChefTalk.  They may or may not have connected their accounts with Facebook.  However, if you are Facebook friends with them and they HAVE connected their accounts, they will show up on your friends list.
  2. Facebook users identified by their full names like Mary Johnson or John Doe: These users have registered using their Facebook accounts.  Their privacy settings are set so that you can see their names.  However, they might have their privacy set so that only their friends can see their avatars.
  3. Facebook users marked as "Facebook User" or "(Private User)": These users have registered using their Facebook accounts.  Their privacy settings are set so that only their friends or other Facebook users can see their names.  ChefTalk respects the privacy settings of Facebook users.

How Can I Message A Facebook User?

Unfortunately at the moment, it is not currently possible to send a Facebook user a private message.  You can send them Bulletin Board messages, however, which they will receive via email if they have verified their email address.

If that Facebook user has their privacy settings such that you can access their public Facebook listing, you can also message them directly through Facebook.  Please note that some Facebook users appear as "Facebook User (Private)" when you are not logged into Facebook Connect but do reveal that information to logged in users.

Publishing To Your Facebook Wall:

  1. With an account created via Facebook or a linked account, you can now share your forum posts or your product reviews with the world!
  2. On your review or forum editor, you will see a check box at the bottom to publish your content to your Facebook feed.  If you would like to publish this review or post, check the box.  If you do not wish to publish your review or post, leave the box unchecked.  We will remember your most recent setting for the next forum post or review you write.
  3. The first time you do this, you will get a popover asking for additional permissions.  By granting ChefTalk these additional permissions, you will be able to publish your reviews and posts simply by checking the check box (and avoiding any popovers which display previews of your feed post).
  4. But don't worry!  If you don't want to give the site these permissions, you can still publish to your Facebook feed.  But each time you check the "Publish" check box, you'll get a popover asking you to preview the post and confirm prior to publishing.
  5. After you publish a post or a review, it will appear on your Facebook feed.

Changing Your Facebook Connect Settings:

Editing Your Settings

  1. From Facebook.com, you can edit your settings for publishing stories.  You can allow special permissions for publishing without viewing a preview popover prior to posting on your Facebook feed.
  2. Visit Facebook.com and log in.
  3. At the bottom left corner, you will see the Applications bar.  Click on that.
  4. From here, click on "Edit" to pull up the Application Editor.
  5. Typically, you will not see any of your linked external websites (in this case, your linked account with the ChefTalk).  Head over to the "Show" pull down menu.
  6. From here, click to show your "Authorized" applications.
  7. You will now see ChefTalk.
  8. Click "Edit Settings."
  9. From here, you can grant ChefTalk permission to publish stories to your Facebook wall.  To edit your special permissions, click the "Additional Permissions" tab on the popover.  Check or uncheck the box depending on your preferences.
  10. Click "Okay" and you're all set.

Unlinking Your Accounts

  1. From Facebook.com, you can chose to unlink your Facebook account from your ChefTalk account.
  2. Visit Facebook.com and log in.
  3. At the bottom left corner, you will see the Applications bar.  Click on that.
  4. From here, click on "Edit Applications."
  5. Typically, you will not see any of your linked external websites (in this case, your linked account with ChefTalk).  Head over to the "Show" pull down menu.
  6. From here, click to show your "Authorized" applications.
  7. You will now see ChefTalk.
  8. Simply click on the X.
  9. You will get a confirmation popover for the removal of the "application."  Click "Remove."
  10. After you remove the ChefTalk connection, you may need to clear you cache and your cookies to ensure a "clean start."  Here are instructions on how to clear your cache and cookies in Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari, Opera, and Chrome.

For those unlinking an ChefTalk account from your FB account, after doing this, you should be able to log in with your original HTF user name and password.

Help! It keeps asking me to link my Facebook account and I can't log in with my normal HTF account.

If you are visiting ChefTalk and are presented with the following screen, you most likely began the Facebook Connect process and now have a cookie set to remember this setting.

Once you initiate the Facebook Connect process by clicking the "Connect with Facebook" button underneath the site login and confirm you would like to connect your account on the popover (by clicking the "Connect" button), effectively Facebook considers you connected and places a cookie to remember this setting.  Even if you do not fully complete the connect process by creating a new account or linking to an existing account, your Facebook account will continue to communicate with ChefTalk.  Once this happens, you will continue seeing prompts to finish the Facebook Connect process.

If you would like to connect your account to your existing ChefTalk account, follow these instructions.

If you would like to no longer have ChefTalk and your Facebook account communicating, unlink your account.
