Sliced onions

I can't slice onions. I can slice wedges but not uniform slices. There must be some device out there similar to an egg slicer or a bread slicer that will hold the onion and guide the knife to make a uniform slice. My mandolin won't do the job because an onion is too tough and bends the blade. Is there any other device around or do I just need a tougher mandolin?

m not sure if you are at home or meaning at work, but when I have to do large amounts of sliced onion for sandwich bars and the such, the deli slicer is my machine of choice for uniformity.

If at home, I was gonna say mandoline, but I see there in lies a problem. Do you have a good quality mandoline? I use one almost daily, and onions have never been an issue, so long as the blade is sharp.I

Like all good meals, this too shall pass

Hello Diego. Since I believe you're a home cook, I'll say that a good mandoline would do the job nicely. Happily, it doesn't have to be expensive: http://www.cookswares.com/individual.asp?n=6034

If you have a Kitchen Aid stand mixer you can buy a vegetable slicer: http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=...oogle&ct=title.

Or you can go really low-tech (and very inexpensive, too!) and get a little gizmo like this. It'll hold onto the onion and guide your slices to make them uniform: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...lance&n=284507.

Others may have ideas as well; that's the beauty of this site!

Yes, I am a home cook. The cheapie gizmo is like my angelfood cake breaker. I will try that the next time. Also the magic knife that Aurora suggested looks good. I have seen bread slicers like that. Will shop around locally at the cooks shops at the mall. Thanks all.

They bend the blade?! I hate to say it...but you REALLY need to get a new mandolin. I actually spring on mine and got a "Bron" brand one. It's all stainless construction, very nice, very sharp, very versatile.
