Default Odd foreign beverages

Hi all-

My wife is Icelandic, and, while they aren't eskimos, they eat and drink their share of odd stuff. Among other things, hardfiskur (air dried cod/halibut fillet that I swear should be called fish jerky. She has to fight the cat for it) and hakarl (fermented basking shark, caught and left to dry till, apparently, even the seagulls won't touch it. Served on crackers with liberal doses of brennivin, a sort of caraway-flavored vodka that's probably made out of something poisonous.)

Anyhow, a favorite childhood drink of hers is a soft drink called "malt extrakt." I can only find it on websites that export from Iceland in retail quantities, and shipping on a case of the stuff is CRAZY! Anyone have any idea what this stuff is? Perhaps a more readily-available substitute?
