Since my 39th anniversary is approaching, thought I'd revive this thread.
Since the electrician from last year NEVER did show up (now an ex-friend I'd known since 1984), I had to start all over picking contractors.
After an indeterminable wait, they "finished" the new roof last Wednesday. I drove straight to their establishment from work on Thursday and paid them the $4000 I promised. Was going to hold back some, because I found out the roof wouldn't be inspected by the building inspector until the 8 new windows are put in. The Gutter people are waiting for the stucco guy to finish, and the stucco guy is waiting for the window/roofing people to finish.
Well, anyway, they have this free Country program which is called the North Metro Suburban Housing Authority, and their services are free, including this really great ex-contractor who'd been in the business for 20+ years. Well, he visited my roof on Thursday, and I didn't get his email report until Friday morning. He says "I've never seen a roof with so many turned up and turned down corners on the shingles. If I were you I'd have the guy who owns the roofing company come out and take a look. This is truly out of the ordinary".
Oh golly geee willickers. I find this out the morning AFTER I paid for the roof.
And to top that off, I had to go back Friday morning to the oral surgeon because my bone graft sutures seemed to have come loose and my teeth are hurting more than I've ever experienced.
So, not being the world's most level emotional person, I totally lost it on Friday night and left two very scathing (but not obscene or anything like that) voice mail messages to the contractor who did the roof. They were supposed to show up on Friday as I was home all day nursing my swollen jaw.
His workers also left a big SPLOTCH of what looked like green paint on the south apex of my roof. I thought someone had already vandalized my new roof, and I didn't see the splotch until AFTER I returned from paying for the roof on Thursday pm.
So, he tells me its really chalking grease and "I" should be able to easily wash it off with a hose. SInce its at the top of my roof, that would require me (who's almost 60) to climb a ladder to spray it. And I got mad "Why should I have to clean up after your guys? And what's with them leaving the splotch there in the first place?"
Oh, did I mention his workers also broke off the exhaust pipe to my furnace and were supposed to show up on Friday to fix it. It sticks out about a 1 1/2 feet to keep the exhaust gases from being sucked back in by the intake opening right next to it. As I said, no one showed up or called.
It also rained really hard on Saturday, it DIDN'T take the green chalking grease off my roof.
So, now I'm wondering what's going to happen next. The windows finally came in, and someone was supposed to call me (again on Friday), to arrange to come over and start installing them. As I pointed out, I heard from no one.
So, was my rage justified? Should I have called and left the messages on Friday night? At the time it seemed appropriate cause I was fuming angry.
Not only did I have questions about the roof curling, but was told that it is "natural" and will flatted out when the heat of the sun seals the shingles. I bought that line, and then the NMHA contractor inspects my sight and in all of his years of contracting he's never seen anything like it. Wouldn't you know that'd be my luck.
Guess I should be greatful that I'm now coming close to 39 years with the sweetest (well sometimes she still is sweet) girl in the world.
Age seems to have a way of making people cranky, thats all I can say.
Did I leave anything out? Nope, except its getting late in the year for stucco, and I'm not sure how much longer Portland cement can still be applied and set well, especially when its on the vertical not the horizontal!
And what to do about the "already paid for" roof that is "quite out of the ordinary", the tension of dealing with these people to put in 8 new windows, waiting to hope the stucco guy can still do the job (or even wants to yet this year), and knowing I've already put down half on the new gutters that never clog!
