Default Site outages

This past week has been brutal on ChefTalk as we have been experiencing more outages than ever. It is difficult to say why exactly this happened since it does not seem like our traffic increased that much in the past week. Most likely our host changed something and it affected us.

Here is what we have done to correct the problem. We have moved the community forums database to a fully dedicated server and we are running the forums off of this database. This should take away all of the database outages we have been having.

Our next steps are migrating the main site content off our old set up and moving to a new set up and moving the entire site to the fully dedicate server.

Please take time to visit the people that made this possible by helping with the move and providing us with a reasonable dedicated solution: Website Hosting by CHIhost.com, Chicago Illinois

The database is, as I haven't seen any of the database timeout errors.

A few of you have put tickets into the CHIhost helpdesk regarding this issue. I want remind you that at this point CHIhost is currently only doing the database hosting for this site.

The database was half the problem, the other half is the actual php/coldfusion pages, and the server that handles the delivery of those, which is currently separate from the CHIhost database server.

While we hoped that moving that database would free up enough resources to speed up the site as well at all times, it appears that either it didn't or the current host lowered the limits, as if they are trying to give just enough resources to keep the site barely up. (CHIhost does not do any limiting on their dedicated servers)

This particular site and related content, like the forum, gallery, job board, etc, are very cpu intensive, so it’s a lot harder to manage, and more than just a basic hosting plan is needed. Plus the current company that is hosting that stuff now doesn't seem as experienced, or have as good of hardware compared to CHIhost.

The conversion from one computer language to another (example converting from ColdFusion to php) is easier said than done, as the languages are not compatible and there are not tools to do it automatically. The scripts that power this site are the result of hundreds and hundreds, if not thousands of hours of coding, debugging, etc. Most or all of which were done by Nicko himself.

Once this transition is fully complete it is expected to handle the growth of cheftalk.com for years to come!

PS. If you could refrain from putting tickets into the CHIhost helpdesk that would be appreciated, the CHIhost support team are trained to only assist authorized contacts for the account. Also many of the CHIhost staff are cheftalk members and I assure you this site (this site's database for now) receives special attention. If there is a specific issue you need to address feel free to PM me.

A few hiccups aren't going to chase me off either.

It's still very slow at times, no big deal since it's being addressed. Thanks for an excellent site
