Default Review: McDonald’s Shamrock Shake

The Shamrock Shake was brought to market by McDonald's in the 1980s. It essentially is a limited-edition vanilla shake with some mint flavoring brought out around St. Patrick's Day. Have you ever had one?

Yes, I've had one. Don't remember it being memorable and the operative word here is "one". Wasn't particularly good or bad, it was insipid.

I had one, too. Unfortunately, my taste-memory conjured up Donnatol, a remedy for upset stomach in my childhood. It's also why I avoid drinking Grasshopper cocktails or creme de menthe in anything.

They haven't had the Shamrock Shakes around here in a few years. They say they weren't a big enough seller to occupy the shake machine. That cold minty taste was a nice treat once a year. Couldn't drink a very large one or very often. There was a frozen alcohol blender drink that came out a few years ago that tasted just like it, but they discontinued that too.

One of my fondest memories of childhood, was when my dad and I would drive in his dirty, smelly work truck to get our once-a-year Shamrock shake. Even as I moved around the country, we would call each other and ask if the other got their shake. Not the yummiest thing in the world, but... I guess we put value on some weird stuff. To this day, I take a student with whom I am particularly close with for a Shamrock shake. My one and only visit each year to McD's.

I missed my Shamrock shake this year and am quite disappointed. Are they good? They aren't great, but they aren't horrible either. What they are is a blast from my childhood. Where I grew up in Vermont the closest McD's was about 1 hour away so eating there was considered a "treat" doubly so around St. Pat's day when you could get a Shamrock shake. I guess I've never outgrown that particular feeling that these were some special treat. I have to admit though I am not overly fond of them (once a year is enough) but it is strange how disappointed I feel when I miss out.

Haha! I haven't seen those things since the 80's. I loved them as a kid.
What a flood of memories... remember Uncle O'Grimacey from the commercials?
I doubt that I would like them now, and the Chez Ronald in my area doesn't serve them anyway.
This thread just made my day, though!

This is hilarious because the keyword is "one." I tried it once with some friends and not being a big fan of McDs in the first place, I was not impressed. If anything, I'll stick to the chocolate.

absolutely awesome.
for some reason i hate mint flavored anything (except for candy canes of course...or those lifesavers) but i think that the shamrock shake goes very well with mcdonalds poor excuse for ice cream. Any other ice cream or shake product from mcdonalds is absolutely disgusting but the shamrock shake fixes it.

I like them.
