Default Wintering over my Thyme

If I remember correctly Thyme is a perrenial so it will return, but for now before the snows get here for good I would like to harvest what I have. Should I cut a bunch of braches, cut it off at the bottom and leave only the root, pull it out altogether and replant next year?
Any thoughts?

Trim it back if you like. I generally let mine be. It should keep most of it's leaves through the winter (Zone 5) at least that's my experience.

I'll clean anything up in the spring that I don't like from its winter experience.

If you want a more trimmed formal appearance, then the answer will be different. I let mine grow as it will as a ground cover. I have three different thyme varieties I let compete there. Works out well for me.

Don't cut it down to the root. Always leave 1/3 of the top so it can still get sun to photosynthesize and feed the roots. If you cut the plant off at the root you'll kill the plant.
