Post Another Question for Islander - Salt Spring Island Farmer's Market

Islander,

Hi. It's writer again. Can you tell me which fruits and vegetables I'm likely to find in the Salt Spring Farmer's Market the first week of September. Specifics would be good. Like, rather than tomatoes, tiny yellow heirloom pear tomatoes. Also, what kinds of seafood and fish are in season there? Is there anyplace to buy them. I know most the islanders tend to do their own crabbing and such. Thanks.

Hi Writer: Well, again, I don't know if I can help you out with your inquiry about what may be available at the Farmer's Market in early September - I seldom go because of the crowds and I grow nearly all my own produce. I don't really know if there is a grower/vendor that would have the heirloom pear tomatoes available that you mentioned. As far as seafood....there is a very good fish market within walking distance of the Market and I would highly recommend them. I think you will have to take your chances with the Market. I would like to hear how you make out. Sorry I couldn't be of more help to you and Good Luck.

Hey you two, I've read and re-read your posts a couple of times and I wanted to let you know that you could send each other private messages or e-mail when you want to talk about things like these. Just a thought. I didn't know we could do this myself for a long time until someone else showed me how to do it. Like, for example, if I wanted to send islander a private message, I would look on his profile for the image that says "send private message" and click on that. I would then type him a message and he would get it, through e-mail if he has authorized cheftalk to notify him when he gets these, and also if he checks his profile. If I wanted to e-mail him, I would click on the image that says "e-mail islander". I think if you try this, it would be much better for both of you to communicate more. I just wanted to let you know of this because it works for me; I get my messages every time this happens.

Thank you for responding Islander. What do YOU harvest from your garden during the first two weeks of September? Also, is the Saltspring Island lamb all it's cracked up to be? Thanks.

No Smile

Hi Writer: Well, your first question about what I harvest in the first two weeks in September....hoping the corn will be ready, but who knows, cabbage is hanging in there, beets should be big, potatoes and beans. (with luck). Second question: SS lamb, we haven't had any in a long, long time as we are beef producers and there is a long-standing grudge between the two, hee hee. It really is good, but it depends on how it was raised, fed, finished, butchered and cooked. There are some producers superior to others as in anything else. Personally, I would take one of our own steaks over lamb any day, but I am prejudiced as you can imagine. Islander
