| You are so right Debbie. A life without books? Impossible. As a kid I was so frustrated that I had to depend upon others to read. I could not wait to learn to read. I never leave home without a book. You never know when you might have to wait. With a book time goes by faster. I have to confess, I often read more than one novel at a time. Depending upon my mood, I'll want to read different things. I love the classic, the French ones. Old favourites are Maupassant and Zola. The Belly Of Paris is a must for anyone who loves food. I love the freuilleton of the XIX century.

| I read The Alchemist, but here was another that i found even more touching which was 'Down beside the rio Piedra i sat and Wept' (incidentally who wrote the poem 'By Grand central station I sat and Wept' I did know at one point in my life but I've forgotten )I like the simplicity in Coehlo. I think that he derided by many critics for being over simplistic , but I feel that he is a deliberate 'back to basics' write. I have been told that 'Brida' is an excellent book, only it's not available in English! On the other end of the scale i love Kundera, I always find him so entertaining |

| What a nice discussion. In my opinion only two things are life changing 1.Physical Pain 2. An unfulfilled love As I grow older I realize that only pain, physical or phychological can alter you life. You mentioned Paolo Choelio. He was suffering from mental illness for years and this gave him this unique way to express his feelings in a simple way. You mention Dostoyiefky. he was an ill person too. Check Fitzerald. So many dissapointments in love and an experience with mental illness. Irish Murdoch. She was ill also. Pain softens our souls and make us express the ultimate truths as they really are : Simple |
