What are your favorite magazines? I like to read the R.S.V.P section of Bon Appetit to see if I have been to any of the places listed, or to steal an idea for a dinner special.

Pastry Arts and Art Culinare, over the top and very inspiring.

not really for the recipes, but for the gorgeous produce that they show how to grow: Kitchen Gardener.

I am an avid fan of Food Arts. It often comprises recipes that are complex/dignified enough to be restaurant class, without the pretention of using purely exotic ingredients as a prerequisite. The profiles of the feature chefs/restaurants are often more 'realistic' than some other publications. Furthermore, they don't seem to always feature the same 10 or 20 guys on the circuit.

Saveur is by far my favorite magazine. It is one of the few magazines that really cover their topics in depth. Not only is it a great food mag. but it is also a great travel mag combining the best of food and travel in one.

The editor is an old friend from Los Angeles (he used to write for the LA times.) I think the magazine is great... a beautiful publication.

Cook's Illustrated Magazine

There is NO advertising. It is the premier test kitchen which tells you the why and how of getting the best recipes.

I love all of the above but must add "The Art of Eating" which has so much vital information packed into so few pages.

Pastry Arts is a groovy one. Fancy Food is great for gourmet food establishments.

In addition to Cook's Illustrated and Saveur (sp?) and Kitchen Garden, I really love reading Taunton's Fine Cooking magazine. It was really wonderful illustrations and the articles are first rate.

What happened to Gourmet? What did Ruth Reichl allow? It used to be treasured as old National Geographics are--for the content! Saveur is very good yet who has seen Saveurs? Both La Cucina Italianas also delve into what too many "cooking" magazines fail at: informing & teaching. Foto ops of goofy grins and trite poses merely prop up trendy emptiness...give me honest food shots! Also, try to find "Slow" magazine. It's an international journal published quarterly focusing conviviality, hospitality, taste education and food culture. Feed one's brain to feed one's hunger.

I do like gourmet but being from Qz, I have discovered a New Zealand magazine even very hard to find here called Cuisine...its really worth a look, informative not just all pretty pictures and has lots of restaurant and chef profiles, covers all the competitions [down this end of the world] and I just love the recipes and presentation, I read them over and over.

I agree about Cuisine magazine - excellent content.
