Wink Deep Fryer Reviews?

Anyone out there have any experiences with deep fryers, good or bad? I have an Oster I'm looking to replace (the thing takes *forever* to heat up and doesn't keep it's temperature at all well), so I'm looking for any recommendations you all might have. I've checked most of the 'net sites, includig epinion.com, but they only review the very consumer-oriented types... So what do you all use? Pros? Cons? Would you recommend it?

Thanks a bunch!
-Roger

Hi Roger and welcome to Cheftalk!

We just bought this one

They have several models but this one is the best we tried so far. Keep away from models with a removable bowl. It's tempting for easy cleaning but takes forever to heat up and doesn't keep it's temperature at all well, just like yours.

Hope this helps.

I'll be happy to sell or trade you a multi-cooker [deep fryer, slow cooker, rice cooker...] that I never use. It works fine, I just don't really deep fry often enough to bother with it.

Thanks cchiu, I am totally looking for a fryer. This is the sort of compare page I was looking for. It is very frustrating. I was all set to order up a DeLonghi D406DZ until I recently read of its "plastic" dials and their tendency to melt.

Hmmmm?... No thanks, I'll keep looking.

I need one soon though. Thats the problem!!!

Thanks again for the link. I am gonna love this messageboard!!!!!

RJ

Here are a couple of threads that have recently appeared on eGullet here and here.

There's also a nifty-looking fryer from Waring in the Williams-Sonoma catalogue.

Suzanne, THIS ONE LOOKS GREAT!!!! I only wish I had a good review of it ~~ or many to be exact. Judging a book by its cover may cause you to REALLY get burned with deep fryers. All of those controls mean nothing if they melt away like I've heard happens on the DeLonghi or aren't accurate like many others I've seen. Hmmmm.... I think I may get one of those Fry Daddys or something. $20 @ WalMart.

In need of help (with fryers),
RJ

I'm thinking of going to a W-S store to check it out; I think they have them in stores, not just on-line and in the catalogue. If I do, I'll report back.

Yeah, there's always a concern about the possibility of getting burned (literally and financially). I also want to know what the temperature range is -- a lot of units don't go over 350ºF, so what good are they? -- and what the recovery time is (how long it takes to get back up to the temperature you want).

Suzanne,
In addition to all the other stuff I have been doing, I have taken on 2 nights a week at Williams-Sonoma. There are 2 fryers we stock in the store. One is the "RotoFryer" with a closed dome and rotating 'blade' that agitates the oil. It is programmable on several different levels (time, temp, beep-when-done, etc). Also, Calphalon just sent us a new model. It is actually a large pot with a fry basket and a 'perch' to suspend the basket over the oil. It is black anodized and is $150, I believe.
If there are other W-S questions I can field, please ask away. And, yes, my wife got nearly an all-W-S Xmas

I'll tell you what.... I really still think the DeLonghi D406DZ is the fryer I am gonna purchase. In school today, I was talking to a friend (who might soon be a member here as well) about Christmas gifts we've received this past holiday. Well, she told me that she was given the DeLonghi D406DZ. After I freaked out, she told me she's yet to use it so she couldn't give me a first hand review, but she said that it came highly recommended. I know Alton Brown recommends it as well. I think I may just go out and try my luck. Alton sure knows his stuff. So does my friend.
