Post You Are Lucky

Lucky you, shimmer...I have tried repeatedly to do the same thing you did; I mean, to go get a job in a culinary restaraunt even before you leave for school, but I have had no success. There's one gourmet restaraunt where I live called "The White House Grill" and it serves Mediterranean food; I was really hoping to get hired there to get a real idea of what the gourmet world is really like. I suspect it is my hearing problem that prevented me from getting hired; I have been to every restaraunt in the town where I live, but every time I tell them about my hearing problem, they refuse to hire me. I had hoped to be more prepared for school by having previous experience in a gourmet restaraunt. But now I am counting on being able to get a regular job again after I graduate from school.

LOL, this topic was meant to be a response to shimmer's topic, "Other Ways of Learning"! Whatever happened to make me post it as a new topic?!?

Your desire for a coffee mug, maybe?

no, silly, I was just browsing the boards yesterday looking at several topics, and when I posted this reply (intended to be the reply to shimmer's topic) I was thinking at the same time of the other posts I already posted and those I have looked at. I was also thinking about my boyfriend, waiting for him to get on ICQ, a computer program I use to communicate with him (sigh). When I have a lot of things on my mind at once like this, I usually don't pay much attention to what I am doing.

Don't worry, Afra. I saw it anyway. I didn't start out getting paid, I just said I wanted to watch and ask questions to see if it would be something I wanted to do.

Isn't it against the law to not hire someone based on a disability? Can you find a quiet gourmet restaurant where hearing well wouldn't be as much of an issue? Hmm...

I had to call many many places before I could find people willing to let me into their kitchen. I didn't mean to make it sound easy. People are worried about lawsuits, recipe stealing, health code violations, etc, etc, etc. I finally found a chef who has been the driving force behind several people changing career paths, and was excited about being a force behind mine. I find that reluctant people should just say no in the first place.

I wish you luck. I hope something ends up working out!

Shimmer
(Oh yeah, and good luck with the coffee mug, I don't think i'm ever going to get there)
