Post An Anxious future CIA student

I have been accepted into the August starting date at the CIA, but am very nervous about what to expect once I arrive onto the campus. I am currently a high school student in California. All insight from past and current students would be greatly appreciated.

Red face

Don't be angry with us. We all didn't go to the CIA. Maybe instead of asking just about one school ask in general. YOUR NOT the only new person attending school in August. Think for a minute. . . there is a whole class of new comers to the CIA, Virginia Tech, Floridia State, any college in the USA. Just calm down and go with the flow. College is different than high school, more work and harder work and usually no mommy and daddy to help out. Hope you do well and ENJOY yourself, you will have a life time to work and be unhappy.

Thumbs up

ok...being a CIA student myself, currently on externship, I can tell you it's a LOT of work. If you're willing and able to invest a lot of time into your studies, it will be very rewarding...I guarantee it. There is a lot to be learned at the Institute, and I highly recommend taking advantage of the 70,000+ volume library. If you're hardcore, balls to the wall about cooking, you'll do fine. If you're more into relaxing, and trying to have fun at college, the CIA will leave you in the dust...there's no time to catch up if you get behind, and to be completely honest with you...make the most of it. The CIA will turn you into a very valuable commodity after you're done, but my best advice is to stay confident, but the chef-instructors can detect the slightest bit of arrogance, and will eat you alive if they see it. Have fun while you're cooking, and don't let it stress you out, but also keep it in perspective that you will never know everything, but continue to try and keep learning. Good luck, and good cooking.

Dear anxious.

I am currently a student at the CIA. My best advise is to make all the money you can this summer you will need it.

The campus is very beautiful but far from civilization. A car or friends is a must.

Also seperate your self from the losers. The school seems to be a baby sitting joint for young alcholics. This distructive behavior will help you flunk out in no time.

Then learn all you can from the people around you. There are many levels of expertise here.

Good luck!

I graduated from the CIA back in '87. Back then it was great. There is no other school in which you would be able to learn more. You will not be the only new person there. All of the people in your class will be new and more than likely no one will know each other. Do not be nervous, it will bring you down. Enjoy it to your fullest! If I had the opportunity I would do it all over again.
