Greetings everyone, I visited THE RESTAURANT SCHOOL in Philadelphia,PA which is like an hour away from NJ where I live an it was great. But,I have a bit of a dilemma and I would like your help in finding information on Scholarships,Grants and Loans. So, if you have any info please post it here, not only for me but for those like me and those that will come after. For those of you interested in my gripe(my rant) with the VA and the U.S. Army , please fill free to read on. The dilemma is that my G.I. Bill is worthless. Considering culinary school prices and one's livelihood I find it impossible to go to school in and travel by train daily to another state, work a decent job to pay for a roof over my head and have a chance to sleep. My dreams of one day becoming a great culinary artisan will fade if I don't find funding. If I could fill in those of you who don't know about the GI Bill, you know the $50,000 or so for college that they claim you'll get so easily. Well, I'm a vet (so what, to the VA [veteran's administration] it means nothing special unless you are homeless or need rehab or both)and even that's suspect! The (active duty)G.I. Bill pays 650 per month(full time) and $350 (pt) for 36 months which is around $11,000 ft and $5,000 pt and if one were to ask themselves this; how can a vet use his or her GI BILL and not live in an homeless shelter, they cannot. I apologized to those who feel offended, but right now I have to let off some steam because I really feel cheated. Hey,if anyone got info, please pass it on. --Peace

Go to www.acfchefs.org and look up students, scholarships, and grants. They have every link that deals with these matters. [This message has been edited by Chef David Simpson (edited 01-24-2001).]

Welcome back Born 2 Cook! You can also create a scholarsihp search profile at Fastweb.com. They take down your interest and education informatin and log it in to a file to search for grants and shcolarships on a regular basis...and you get notified by e-mail when a new scholarship offer comes up. Check it out! Here is the link! http://www.fastweb.com [This message has been edited by layjo (edited 01-24-2001).]

B2C, Schools I know of rely heavily on SallieMae to provide laons to students. SallieMae is actually the Student Loan Marketing Association. They are a quasi governmental org. Ask the school about them. Kyle

I've used fastweb but haven't been to thrilled with it. For example, my profile shows that I'm going to culinary school in the Fall and that I live in CA. The 2 scholarship "matches" that came up were one for someone who is currently a culinary/home-ec high school teacher that is looking to further their education. The other was for students who live only in Illinois. Not much help. ![]()

Hi B2C - 2 weekends ago I went to TRS open house (I live just outside Phila in the W. Burbs) since it's closest to home. By the time the financial aid guy finished talking, the 12-15 of us who were there had that familiar "deer in the headlights" look! (I pray he knows what he's talking about...) By the time he was done, he had me almost convinced that you could attend and pay next-to-nothing with grants, loans, etc., etc., etc... 30+ years ago a good friend got out of the Navy, was accepted at CIA, GI bill would have picked up the tab and he decidedto become a cop instead - now he's a private investigator / pig farmer down south somewhere . . . I wanted to trade places then... Good luck and if you figure this grant thing out, call me, e-mail me, launch a pigeon... I wanna talk!

I will agree with you Logan, on the limtations that this site might offer, I have had very few offers in my reach also. But this is just one rescource out of many ie. (James Beard Foundation, National Restuarant Assoc., American Culinary Federation like posted above) I viewed the site that ChezMichelle sugessed and it looks to be very informing! Well I hope everyone can find what they are looking for. And thanks for everyones input also! [This message has been edited by layjo (edited 01-30-2001).]

| Hey, Born2Cook, thought I'd share with you what I am doing....I too am considering going to a culinary school in Denver, Colorado, and I am in about the same boat that you are in about the financial matters. I don't have a job and I don't have any income, so I have been given a FAFSA form from the school I wish to attend. If you would like to check this out on the web, you can go to: www.fafsa.ed.gov Good luck! ![]()
