Question Some advice....

Hi. I am twenty years old and I am looking to get into a culinary program. I want to become a exc. chef and owner of a resturant. My question to you is how do I know if I will like it? Also if I get a job in a resturant I would not like to be a buss boy. How would I get the experience in a kichin without the experience. Please write back.

Thanks,
Michael

Dude, get a job preping(cutting veggies etc.) in the kitchen of a great restaurant. Keep your head down and learn. if you like it, go to school or get an apprenticship, if not, no harm done.Or you may want to take a short course at a culinary school.
good luck

Hey, thanks for the advice. How would you feel if you liked cooking and eating at four star resturants but, really really wanted to go to culinarl school but, had no idea what happens in a kitchen? Write back soon.

Thanks,
Michael

Cool

First of all, if you have any illusions that this industry is glamourous and want to become a chef because of the fame and fortune, think twice about it. For every Emeril and Wolfgang Puck there are thousands of chefs who get very little recognition. If you truly have a passion for food, don't mind 10-16 hr. days in a hot, stressful environment, then beg your way into a kitchen as a prep cook to get an idea what this business is all about. Record numbers of people are entering this field, and I'm convinced it is because all they see is the glamorous side that Food TV shows. It is a truly rewarding profession for those who have a passion for it, but the sacrifces one makes are tremendous. Get some experience under your belt and then make the decision if this career is right for you. Good luck.

Like Pete said Michael, go and get a job in a kitchen. Find out if it is what you want to do.
