| I'd be surprised if anyone volunteered here to do the research for your class. Try going to the major search engines on the internet...type in the key words you think will help you find your answer. (If you look hard enough, you'll find your answer.) www.infoseek.com www.northernlight.com www.google.com www.yahoo.com www.excite.com [This message has been edited by cchiu (edited 02-05-2001).] |

| Sean: Here is the result of my research on your behalf. So far, nobody, including these elite resources, knows the answer to your question, even the Escoffier Foundation. Here is the text of my e-mail and answers to same. -----Original Message----- From: Les Brooks [mailto:RES0ANWZ@VERIZON.NET] Sent: Wednesday, February 21, 2001 10:06 AM To: helmut@schonwalder.org Subject: Boulanger Many references to the first restaurant claim that is was A. Boulanger in Paris in 1765. However, I have yet to find any reference that gives either his first name or full name. Do you have any such reference? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Les Brooks Dear Les Brooks, No I don't have more details than "Boulanger the Soup Vendor," as the person who coined the word "restaurant." However he had been sued several times in Paris and I could imagine that one of the French restaurant sites could either answer your question or tell you how to get to Boulanger's court records provided such were not destroyed in wars. If you really want to know, you might want to start your search with http://www.maitre-d-hotel.com/ . That's Gil Galasso, the French restaurant professor, tell him helmut sends you. Good luck and let me know what you find out. Have a most beautiful day now. helmut s. ----- Message d'origine ----- De : Les Brooks À : maitre_d_hotel@hotmail.com Envoyé : jeudi 22 février 2001 06:06 Objet : Boulanger Helmut Schonwalder couldn't answer the following question and suggested that I ask you. Les Brooks This information is correct, The first restaurant was created by A. Boulanger (nickname " Champ d'oiseaux"). Located, rue du Louvres in Paris. He also has created the name "restaurant" because on the top of the front door, was written in latin the following sentence : "venite ad me omnes qui stomacho laboratis et ego restaurabo vos". Boulanger who was supposed to have established the first restaurant in Paris in 1765. So far, I have not been able to find this information. The refererences are all to a "certain" M. Boulanger. Is the information regarding this gentleman's first name available anywhere that you know of? Any help in this regard will be greatly appreciated. | I did a little poking around myself, though not as much as Crudeau :-) I found nothing to help with the mystery. I saw referrences to both A. and M. Boulanger. I suppose it is possible that it might not be an initial. I have a friend whose first name is J, not an initial, no period, just the letter J ![]()
