Default When to flour and grease a baking pan

When baking a cake, is it necessary to grease and flour the pan or you are safe just greasing a pan?

Thanks

Over the years I have seen it done both ways. I myself like to use parchment paper. Its clean and when cake is removed from pan it adds some degree of stability to handeling .
