Chef Tools of the trade....now or later?

I'm going to be headed to a culinary school, up near blacksmith VA. I was wondering if I should get my knives, beaters, graders, ect. before I go to the school...or should I wait until after?

Thanks for the help in advance

If the school does not provide you with a kit, definitely get them before you start.

Try looking around amazon for knives/equipment at a very reasonable price. Avoid the store inside the school

You will probably be better able to answer this question yourself after day one.
They'll either provide you with a kit or not, or give you a list of what's needed.

Chances are you can get that question answered ahead of time.

Call the school and ask them what equipment will be required, which of it the school supplies, and which you have to purchase yourself. Then get the "purchase your own" stuff before heading to school.

Get the equipment list ahead of time and go to your local restaurant supply store for them to fill it for you.

The schools will most certainly have MUCH higher prices and less selection at their campus store. It's tough enough on the wallet to be a culinary student, but when the school gouges you on equipment, it's insulting.

Find out where the restaurants buy their supplies in your town and go there. You'll save a lot of money, have greater selection, better advice, and be purchasing in your local community. The business owner will appreciate it.
