| Many people feel there is a huge difference in the quality of many spices, either by grinding your own or using premium sources/varieties. The typical stuff we get in the grocery store is not always the highest quality and best tasting. Fresh ground cloves are considered by many to be preferable, real vanilla beans (not sure it's really a spice) are vastly better, and some prefer to use only Ceylon cinnamon. For vanilla ice cream, I am partial to Madagascar Bourbon Vanilla beans. What spices have you found to differ substantially in quality by grinding your own or using better/specific sources? Inquiring minds want to know!

| Living in Wisconsin we are lucky to have Penzey's Spices so close, especially with the opening of their Appleton store. I now use Penzey's for almost every spice & dried herb need I have. You can't beat them!!!

| I've been using whole spices for years; I grind them up when I need them ( I possess a small coffee grinder for this) and keep them in a dark closet. I've found Indian spice companies to be very reliable: Deep Foods, or Laxmi Brand, for example. Fresh, good quality. As for vanilla, the "pod" is actually the seed pod of a Mexican orchid. Vainilla means " little pod" in Spanish. |
