Tongue Hooray for Turkey Sandwiches

You know I love the Turkey, sweet potatoes, dressing, and pie.
But to tell the truth, it's turkey sandwiches that tops my Thanksgiving favorite list. I even lobby to get the dinner moved up to early afternoon, that way I can start on sandwiches later the same day.

How about sharing with us how you make your Turkey sandwich?

Mine? - Pretty simple, good dense chewy Italian Bread, tiny sweet pickles cut into little slices, white and dark meat, a thin layer of cranberry sauce, and Miracle Whip. A side of potato chips and I'm in heaven.

Ciabatta, white meat turkey, thin slices of tomato, spread with pesto
...or...
Hearty white bread spread with a little grainy mustard, white and dark turkey, spread with my cranberry-orange relish

I'm a hot turkey sandwich kinda guy. Bread (preferably like a Texas toast) with turkey on it (dark meat preferred, but regardless . . . .) smothered in gravy. Mashed taters on the side drowning in gravy as well. The only problem is a usual lack of gravy. Since I'm cooking this go round, I'm gonna remedy that problem!

Can you tell the Big Dog is a meat and potato kinda guy? Veggies are good for you, I know, but are certainly not on my top ten favorite foods to consume.

My sister is a purist -- she loves late night simple turkey sandwiches on Thanksgiving -- San Fran sourdough, mayo, turkey, salt.

I, on the other hand, love a good turkey melt with stuffing -- its basically grilled cheese with turkey and stuffing. Then on Friday morning, I will usually make a "Thanksgiving turkey fritata" (I know, not a sandwich, but still fun). I use the stuffing as the base, throw in whatever vegies are left over and still appealing, add pulled turkey, throw eggs in, top with cheese, tomatoes if available, fresh oninons/shallots/garlic, grated parm or shredded cheese...take off the stove and throw under the broiler for a few minutes.... YUM! Serve with toast and left over cranberry sauce and an orange wedge... glass of sparkling wine.... Is it turkey time yet???!!!!!

I'm with Botanique's sister. white bread, mayo, s&p.

If I have ham on hand, then it gets much more complicated with cheese, mustard, and some vegies, as well as toasted.

I have to admit, when I make a turkey sandwich at home...it's not classy, it's not elegant, heck it's barely "holdable".

Bread: Whatever you have on hand (something able to soak up a little gravy and hold it's shape is preferable)

I then basically take your traditional plate of thanksgiving food and put it on the sandwich: Turkey, stuffing/dressing, gravy, taters, and some cranberry sauce to top it off.

The good thing is, you can do it open-faced or regular sandwich style if you so prefer.

Cranberry, mayo and havarti on white bread. Safeway deli makes the best one.

Remember that Friends episode when Ross went crazy because somebody (turns out to be the boss) stole his turkey sandwich that Monica made? It had the "moisture factor" - a slice of bread in the middle that had been dipped in gravy. That's the sandwich I make (or to be more precise, my wife makes.) That was Friday's lunch.

This year, rather than adding the stuffing and cranberry to the sandwich, I added it to the bread!

Thumbs up

Oh yeah Kyle, that looks great, what a great idea, just the sort of "outside the breadbox" thinking that creates great new platefuls!
I can't wait to try that with my own apple walnut wild rice stuffing. I was never really crazy about putting it into the sandwich, a texture thing I think, but putting the flavor into the bread? fantastique!
