| Ok here is what is going on for me. I’m compiling my list of basic kitchen gear from the sources I’ve collected. When that’s Done, I’m going to investigate the different type of these items (Knife types and choices and such). I can’t wait to see what the Lord does opening doors for me and such. Based on several things I’ve heard and my personal preferences I’ve ordered several books. BTW If you’re going to order books online, check out several different sites as you can get good bargains by doing so. Like the prices I found for “The Joy of Cooking” were $40.00 new, $22.95 used, $16.00 used $4.35 new. Needless to say I snatched up the 4.35 one, and with shipping it was less than 8 bucks. Here’s what I ordered. There are both cooking and Christian books on the list. Moderator's note: only the cooking books are listed below. Has anyone ever used the first two books before? I like Alton Brown, but I’m just guessing as to the quality of his books. I did use the link from this site for both the books I bought from Amazon BTW. | You'll enjoy the Alton Brown books, as they have a lot on information on the "why" of various cooking techniques. You can learn a lot from them. A word of caution, however, about his I'm Just Here for More Food: Food x Mixing + Heat = Baking: The early edition, at least, was full of typos. If you go to the Good Eats Fan Page at http://www.goodeatsfanpage.com/ABFP/index.htm and click on the "Errors in I'm Just Here For More Food" you'll find a listing of the errors. Kind of a PITA, but worth if for a good book. |

| I'm reading the Gear for your Kitchen book, and it is great. It is telling me a lot about what i need in my kitchen and what i don't. I also got a tiny Joy of cooking minibook. It has told the full large version should be very valuable to beginning cooks. |

| Ram- you'll want a full-sized Joy because you will use it all the time. It's the Encyclopedia Britannica of the kitchen. Ours was printed in 1964 and it's disintegrating from use. You also want to get James Beard's American Cooklery which covers just about every topic. Both books are extremely well organized and have excellent indexes. Mike
