Was watching Zonya's Health Bites on PBS and she used can Salmon to make burgers. She said all you need is grind the spine bones right up in the salmon and you get the benefit of extra calcium. We give our dog a can of Alaskan Pink Salmon every 2 Weeks to keep her regular and it works. I also found in super markets this cost $2.50 to $4.50 a can while Wal-mart has Great Value Alaskan Pink Salmon wild caught for $1.38 a can.

My mom made those a bunch when I was young. I hated them. And you still occasionally crunch the bones. Was awful. Probably part of why I'm not fond of salmon in any form but smoked. I'm real picky about ALL fish I eat. No bones is my mantra. Phil Last edited by phatch; 09-26-2006 at 11:25 AM.

I make salmon patties sometimes. I hate the bones! I spend the extra time picking them out so we don't get that nasty texture in our food. Extra calcium can come from a glass of milk or some cheese. LOL

We had salmon patties all the time. My mom used a combination of toasted wheat germ and bread crumbs for the coating. The first time I found bones it seemed kind of gross (being a kid and all) but they would pretty much dissolve and did give that little extra bit of texture. My mom would mash the salmon up pretty good though so having anything serious in the patty was pretty rare. We would add minced onion and celery to ours so the crunch of the vegetables kind of masked any bones anyway. April

I had salmon salad as a kid and I also didn't mind the bones since they weren't going to choke me. The texture, fortunately wasn't offputting to me. And it is also true that bones add much needed calcium!

I like how those cartoon cats can put a whole fish down their throats, and pull out the bones. That's a handy skill to master. I'd like to order a whole fish in a restaurant, and when they come to debone it for you, just say, "no problem, I have it covered" then down the hatch and out with the bones. It could probably get you on Letterman. Kevin I like muskies.

| Has our society gotten so obsessed with getting the "much needed" nutrients that we're now eating fish bones? what happened to a glass of milk?

| Some of us are lactose intolerant. Some of us (also) HATE to drink milk! I'll cook with it, but don't make me drink the stuff. ![]()

We also buy Costco Dog food in the can. It's a good quality and the first ingredient is meat.

Musky, My grandma insisted in serving the smelt larger then usual. We did exactly as you describe. It's the way she made it in Italy. I used to make believe to eat the conch, and make a production out of the smelt. The marinated hot ones were wrapped with a piece of italian bread, pull the bones out by the tail an eat ![]()

Panini, I was joking in my first post obviously, but I love smelt. I don't think I've ever had one so big where you could pull the bones out like that, but I would sure be willing to try. I get the feeling you ate pretty well growing up. Kevin I like muskies.

We did, My Grandmother had an eatery/market in Italy. I use to go to the docks with her in NY to pick through the squid and fish. I realized now thatr I don't think she ever paid for anything. Her sons were all NYC firefighters and police and still are. I can remember suits looking at me holding a bag with all the newspaper wrapped fish sticking out on the train ride home. pan
