Default Botulism- Pickled turnip and beets?

Does this sound like a good way to pickle turnips and beets together in the same jar:

1) Fill jar with salt water
2) Place turnips and beets in jar
3) Put little oil in jar so that the oil floats to the surface and makes a seal

Does this sound like a safe recipe? Would'nt you have to boil everything first? Is there a chance that botulism spores may grow in the jars?

How much salt to how much water to how much beets?

Yes, it sounds dangerous in general.

In a word..."No"!

First off that's not how to pickle an item, second off canning is a potentially dangerous adventure, that you are thankfully aware of.
There are many links to how to do it safely. I don't have any handy so I will forward you to the Michigan State Univerity Extension for one method. Agricultural departments are usually good for this type of info.
