A few weeks ago I ordered a glass of port for the first time; it was fabulous. So, I have now purchased a bottle of 1985 port. What do I do after opening the bottle? I know that wine does not keep that long, even with the best methods of resealing the bottle. Howere, I would hope the port could last for several months. Will the sweetness do the trick? Do I need to do something else? Thanks in advance.

Ports will definately hold much longer than wines. First of all they are fortified and they do go through some oxidation naturally. So they will last a week or two. One relatively cheap way to save wines is with a hand pump. I think they are called vac-u-vins. You place a rubber stopper in the wine bottle and use a pump to pull the air out of the bottle. They are cheap, easy to use and will help save your opened wines if you don't drink it all. P.S. Have fun exploring the world of ports. They are some of my favorite beverages.

Thanks. I've got one of those vacuum things for wine, so I guess I'm ready to go.
