Sorry, but for me the words "best" and "fast food" are an oxymoron.

I never eat at any fastfood place in the UK! Well, not quite true, I buy a fish supper or a white pudding supper about 3 times a year from one of Edinburgh's finest fish n chip shops!

A white pudding is a sausage like food, made from oatmeal, suet, onions and spices - and the chippie's version is then dipped in batter and deep-fried. Too 'bad' to eat more than 2 or 3 times a year! I should explain that a 'supper' in Scotland is a piece of fish or a pudding or a sausage served with a portion of chips (thick cut french fries)

The 'treat' that many (not me, I hasten to add) also buy as a dessert for their fish supper/white pudding supper/pie supper would be a deep fried mars bar... Again dipped in batter! I have not been brave enough to buy one from a chippie, simply because the idea of deep frying the choc in the same oil/fat that has been used for fish etc is just not appealling! However, I HAVE cooked deep fried mars bars for a group of overseas visitors who were curious to taste it. If you want the method/recipe, just ask!!!

| Generally speaking I don't partake in fastfood burgers, but if I had to my choice would be Burger King. There's is actually grilled with flame that imparts a much better taste than griddled burgers like McD's etc. Ishbel, my 15 year old son just heard about deep fried candy bars and is not surprisingly quite interested. Maybe I'll try it once myself What is this recipe that you speak of?

I won't eat at BK, because about 20 years ago, I was eating a whopper, and a huge 2" x 1" piece of flat white rubbery "vein" material came out of the center of the patty. I heard they use Mexican field beef for their burgers. I won't eat at McDonald's, because the last time I ate at McDonald's was about 30 years ago, when I unwrapped a cheeseburger and as I held the burger bun up to my face, I noticed that there was a dead bug trapped in an air pocket on the bottom side of the bun. All they'd do for me when i returned the "awesome" burger was offer me a free pop. Anyway, their burgers don't taste like they did back in the early 1960's when they really were a great tasting burger. Ray Kroc really had a good idea back then! So, I think the last time I ate at a fast food burger joint was in December of 2000, when I was out in California. It was an In and Out burger place next to the hotel I was staying at. It had several chunky gristle pieces in it. Yuck!~ doc doc

On the national scale, none. On a citywide scale, we have a chain called Crown Burger that exists only in the city in a number of locations. It's run by an extended family and their associates. They make a tasty burger. I'm partial to their pastrami burger, but I find myself ordering the junior version as I don't have the appetite I had in younger days. They make a good gyro too. There's a wikipedia page that indicates they have two stores in Denver too. Hmmm. News to me. Crown Burgers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia BTW, they're much faster at service than MCD's or the other chains. I've tried to count, but usually lose count at about 20 milling people behind the counter taking orders, cooking and cleaning. The lobby will be packed but you'll be served within about 5-7 minutes of walking in. McDs, has maybe 5 employees in the whole store, most of whom stand around doing nothing while you try to place an order. Phil Last edited by phatch; 03-27-2007 at 10:56 AM.

chrose The method I used (I've cooked the deep fried bars only on 3 occasions!) is to make a coating batter and leave to rest for about 30 minutes. Whilst it's resting, chuck the Mars Bars (or snickers or whatever) into the freezer to chill them until they are hard and solid, but not frozen. Heat an amount of sunflower oil (enough to more than cover the bars and allow them room to move about whilst cooking). When really hot, I drop in a small piece of bread and if it brown immediately, the oil is hot enough, remove choc bars from the freezer and give a generous dip into the coating batter. Deep fry immediately - remove when browned nicely. The toffee and filling of the bars melts but stays within the batter. And there you have it: a heart attack on a plate!

Scotland has one of the highest incidences of heart problems on the planet! I do not subscribe to the high fat diet, but an occasional white pudding supper won't kill me.... BUT I suspect a weekly diet of fish suppers, fried MArs bars and that other Scottish delicacy.... the deep fried pizza (I kid you not - think polystyrene tile, think thin vinegary tomato sauce, think cheap nasty cheddar type cheese strands - folded in half, coated in batter and deep fried.... Oh yes, haute cuisine, indeed! Let me know how the mars bar treat goes down with the family! Last edited by Ishbel; 03-28-2007 at 12:51 AM.

| Here in Portugal we don't have many fast food companies. Only McDonald's and Burger king and Burger king is not available in so many places. Do burger have so different taste from company to company? They all seems to taste alike to me. Roger.
