Cool Cook Books for Starters

Hi. I am nine years old and just starting to enjoy helping my mom cook. Do you have any suggestions for good cook books for starters? Thank you.

The Joy Of Cooking is always a good place to start.... That's where I began with my mom. I think if you have a certain direction you wish to follow (ie: ethnicity, fish, vegetarian... whatever) there are several books listed that way at your nearby bookstore. I am working on a cookbook geared for children... when I ever get it done (it's been in the works for about 8 years) I'll let you know! There are a few out there already...

I agree, that is a great book for anyone to have in the home. You might also pick up a copy of How to Cook Everything by Mark Bittman. You can pick up a copy of this book at the ChefTalk Store. www.cheftalkstore.com

You will find it in the Education category.

I will add my kudos to the JOY OF COOKING, it is a great starter book and also a great book for veterans also. Once you get your experience THE CHEF'S ART is a great gourmet book for home cooks.

The JOY OF COOKING is a great book to start off with, but read anything you can. Another good book is the DEAN AND DELUCA COOKBOOK. Not only does it have lots of recipes, it also gives you lots of information on lots of different products that you can buy and how to use them. Have fun.

Is this the title to which you referred: "The Chef's Art : Secrets of Four-Star Cooking at Home"? Thank you.

I'm glad to hear so many pros endorse the "Joy of Cooking". I have always thought it was a great book for both hobby chefs and pros alike. I am on my second copy and about to trade it in for a third- it gets so much use at the house.
Of course at work I wouldn't be caught dead with that "housewife" cookbook. The macho chef in me can only refer to Larousse! I guess it's about time I came out of the closet.

I agree with shroomgirl, and also like Julia Child's The Way to Cook for its great photos, "master" recipes with variations, and her approach to basic principles of cooking.

I like "The Best Recipe" by Cooks Illustrated. It has taught me a lot. It tells you exactly why and how to cook things which is perfect for a beginner. Highly recommend!!!
