and freerider, yes, i have had similar experiences.
I make a christmas party every year, a full many-course meal for about 50 people, each dish of which is pretty complicated and very tasty. What do the majority of people ooh and aah about? the roast turkey, which is the easiest part of the meal, except here in italy you rarely get a whole turkey and rarely even a whole roast chicken, so for some reason they think that's the tops.

Generally, though, people are pretty appreciative, except for a few (extremely maddening) dismissive comments ("americans eat jam with turkey!" or "french cheese is all hype - it;s all a variation on gorgonzola". or "What? You put pepper in it - pepper is bad for you". Or "I don;t eat desert".)

{{hugs you guys}}! I am really blessed to have a dh who pretty much loves everything I cook. Most of our friends and family are also into food too. So I'm in a very insulated environment and realize how lucky I am to be there.

I hope each of you remember that when you are faced with people like that...it is their problem, not yours and hopefully that will help you to not feel deminished by them.

I've never had your ice-cream so I can't judge it. But Blue Bunny is a good quality commercial brand.

Don't be upset. Why don't you ask them to use your recipes and ask them their comments. Or, rather then confront or upset, you may ask them the recipes *Bunny Blue Berry Ice Cream) and then gives your comment to them, something like: "my ice cream is tastier then this. Just try it". It's human nature to compare with others and for me, it's a challenge to make my own better then them.

Keep on Smiling and Be Happy

It's the American way right now... low carb diets, Atkins (I think) type. Just a fad and hopefully will go away soon. Seems to be fading a bit already.

I have a friend like that. He eats Circle K hot dogs and loves them. (shiver). I give him my failed experiments and he's a happy camper.

Thank you all for your comments. I feel tons better. I'm going to put the Blue Bunny comment into the category of them trying to save me some time and trouble. I still don't think it could beat my own ice-cream though. I think what upset me about these comments was that it wasn't a reflection on their own choices (I eat Blue Bunny), but rather an instruction for what my choices should be (You should eat Blue Bunny, not your own).

It's nice to know I'm not in this canoe all by myself.

what gets me about the atkins stuff is that it does make you lose weight, because without carbohydrates, your body produces ketones, which are toxins that basically make you sick, so you lose weight. great. and these people usually go around with some kind of holier ("healthier") than thou attitude.

I cook from scratch most of what my family and I eat. I do so because I know cooking is by far healthier then process foods. My problem is most people are uncomfortable inviting me over for dinner because they feel inadequate to cook for me. (I never made a bad comment on anybodies cooking in the past so I don't know why they feel that way). Fortunately for me, I have rarely encountered a comment as what Free Rider received. Only once actually, that was when I decided to experiment and make marshmallows at home. I am still teased about that one to the effect: Why bother making marshmallow at home when the cost only a buck for a zillion!!. I had my reasons then and it wasn't for roasting on a fire but it's useless to try to defend myself anymore. Luc H.

Yes! this is a big problem for me too. I love to eat out, not to have to cook. I like to go to friends' houses. But since i'm known as a really good cook, people are often afraid to invite me. They think they have to impress me. They don;t - i appreciate anyone else's cooking, and particularly the company.

Er.. hey Doc... I'm not a chef nor an electrician, but I'm pretty sure that's not only illegal but dangerous.

Don't feel badly--I posted a recipe on another cooking site for an ice cream I was making with tofu. Actually, it was pretty good and low cal/low fat--admittedly, not what everyone might want, but some people were asking about low cal recipes for ice cream, so I posted it.

Another person posted that they'd rather vomit than eat my tofu ice cream recipe. Hey, I wasn't holding a gun to anyone's head...I was just putting a post up, you don't have to make the recipe. Anyway, I'd like to say it didn't bother me, and I know it wasn't malicious...but I haven't posted on that board since. I thought it was a little rude.
