Default Fish, fish n more fish

I'm going to Portugal next week and all i can think about is fish.Hmmm guess i NEED a holiday. We'll be on the coast in the Algarve where there are lots of harbours = Fish.
I'd love to know what i'm in for, cos i know it makes up a huge part of the cuisine. I've read loads of related recipe books, But some recomendations would be well appreciated. Seems theyre into salted fish Backlau in a big way, never tried it, cant say it appeals but i'm up fr it. I LOVE fish cooked whole and if i can use my fingers i'm even happier.
I'm going to have to lead the others when it comes to cooking and eating out, as if it doesnt come in batter with chips, they'll run a mile. please help

You will love Bacalhau!

We tried it many times in Spanish basque country and Barcelona. We had it on pinxos (tapas), we had it strained and baked until it is creamy in a ramekin with bread (kind of looked like creme brulee!) and also as a filet on potatoes. I expected it to be too salty, but, oh no. You will like it! It's very popular.

I've visited Portugal a lot, but for the past 15 years or so we normally the areas around Lisbon and Porto.

The fish in Portugal is great, including the sardines and shellfish. But have to say that, in my experience, some of the food in the local, smaller cafes was far too greasy for my tastes - and some of the meats were too fatty and very overcooked, particularly in some of the casserole-type dishes.

I was in Lisbon a few weeks ago for a long weekend and ate remarkably well at the boutique style hotel where we stay on our visits to the capital.

Have a great time!

Mezz,

Could be! It did have pine nuts in it. There were many times we had no idea what we were ordering (because of this, I ate my first sirloin in 4 years!)

Thanks for finding that.
