Salmon filets are delivered in styrofoam containers. When unpacked they have a strange plastic-like odor. I wash each filet in cold water to remove the odor. Is this necessary? Would the taste be affected after cooking, if I didn't do this?

jenedachef, I buy all my salmon whole. whether it be Atlantic or pacific etc. I would say 95 percent of the stuff come in Styrofoam caskets...there wrapped in heavy plastic ,but not sealed and iced very well. I have never had a problem with an off order or flavor...and don't think it is necessary to wash the salmon cc

quite possibly, you maybe smelling the styrofoam. Most plastics and foams are made from petrochemicals, and given the nature of these chemicals, some residue maybe temporarily resides with the food. Im not saying that is definitely the cause, but anything is possible.
