hi there i really hope that somebody can help me quick, i have 7 people coming over for dinner in approx 2 hours and i have a disaster with the soup course, its pea and ham soup really easy and simple i thought, but the thing is it leaves a really really sweet aftertaste and i dont know why. ive listed the ingredients that were used and hope somebody out there can help with how to combat the sweet taste that the soup leaves, its not too terrible but obviously the soup shouldnt taste like this.
Onions have a lot of sugar in them; they could be the culprit. Perhaps some more smoke flavor? Of course, try this in a small cup or bowl rather than in the whole pot!
Was the gammon ham cured with sugar? (I think this would be Canadian Bacon in the U.S.)
Try some parmesan cheese on top? Salty vs. sweet.... Sorry I can't be more help.

just realised you've prob had the soup by now....but if there's leftovers, and its still sweet, maybe try to up the sour to balance the sweet, some lemon juice maybe?
Would suspect the ham cure as Mezz says.
You didn't season it with sugar instead of salt?
Did you use minted peas by mistake?
Hope the dinner went well
