Post Latin Names For Fish

I often find it usefull to ask the latin names of the fish I get from my fish wholesaler. It really helps to avoid confusion. (ie. what kind of fish is it any way?) My question is do you know of any on-line referances for fish or of any good books. I rely on James Petersons "Fish and Shellfish" book but if there are any others out there I would love to know about them.

There is a great on-line reference called Gofish.com. The only problem is that there is a monthly charge. Gofish is primarily geared to wholesalers. The books we use are "Grant's Guide to Fishes" and "Freshwater Gamefish of North America".

Jeff I would also recommend picking up a copy of The Seafood Handbook. It is a pretty comprehensive handbook on seafood and it also comes with a cd-rom which you can browse on your computer. If you want to pick up a copy click to this website:

The definitive technical reference to scientific and common names of fishes is published by the American Fisheries Society and is available to non-members for $34. Go to www.fisheries.org, click on "publications" and search on "scientific names".

If you are working in Australia, I have found the most invaluable fish book put ou by the CSIRO..called 'AUSTRALIAN SEAFOOD..hand book'
it is so comprehensive..colour pictures..good descriptions of the outside of the fish as well as description of the flesh and what it would look like if you were trying to decide what a certain cleaned fillet of fish was...this book has saved me so many times...their email address is seafood@marine.csiro.au
