I just remembered all of a sudden that one discussion I and my classmates were having with our teacher on health. My teacher brought up the subject of egg whites and egg yolks. She had asked the class if anyone knew which part of the egg is not good for you. Everyone did not know the answer to that question except for one student. She said that it is the yolk that is not good for you. The teacher then explained why, but I don't remember what she said. Could anyone tell me why they said the egg whites are ok for you but the egg yolks should be avoided? Thanks so much in advance to everyone who responds to this topic!

The yolk, although very tasty, contains fat and cholesterol. Most of that cholesterol is not absorbed by the body, however. [ May 24, 2001: Message edited by: kokopuffs ]

Do a search at EPICURIOUS.COM using either cholesterol or liver as key words. I've explained this one at length. The liver manufactures cholesterol. To absorb dietary cholesterol, one must have a poor diet consisting of junk foods. However, cholesterol floats freely in the blood and must enter into the cell to be metabolized. Failure to enter the cell is one reason for elevated cholesterol; hence MEVACOR. The latter aids entry into the cell. [ May 24, 2001: Message edited by: kokopuffs ]
