| Normally in asian cooking we do use MSG to enhance food flavours, someboy said that its not healthy to take MSG , and other else said that its still contains nutrition values to our human body . What do you Professionals think?? Pls share your knowledge with me Thank you in advance ![]() |

| My children and I have allergic reactions to it.....NOT GOOD!!! Many of our Asian restaurants advertise that they do not use MSG so there must be a customer base that requests it not be used. |

| Tseanduran, Not only do people have to protect themselves from a possible alergic reaction,but there is a very definet taste and aroma that really in offensive to folk. I see less and less MSG being used in asian restaurants in my area and hope that restaurants and food producers follow this downward trend. When I think about the endless amounts of spices and protian etc,etc there really isn't any reason to use it cc

| I agree, no to MSG. Is there some substitute for it? I just leave it out if it asks for it. |

| You really don't know what long terms effects additives can have on your body. I try to avoid them as much as possible.

| The sodium salt of glutamic acid (MSG) is mainly a source of sodium. Though it has no odor on its own, MSG enhances foods with a sweet or salty taste, and enhances "meat" flavors. The FDA does not get my support on this one. Considering the hypertension is this country, thumbs down for MSG. We should not have to be concerned with alergic reactions when enjoying a meal, either. | tseanduran, When I started cooking (in a chinese resturant ), I used to cook with MSG. Then, I found that if I did not use it and use other substitutes, I would get a better flavor, not get thirsty or that aftertaste after I ate. So I stopped using it. Some of the subs. that I used were sugar salt and herbs. D. Lee |

| The first time I had a bad reaction to MSG was when it was used on a steak I was served in a restaurant outside Detroit. The second time was after dining in China Town in Chicago. That one really hit home. I became so sick and dehydrated that I was hospitalized. I have encountered MSG in salad bars, potato chips and cheese burgers. Obviously the stronger the dosage, the strong the reaction. MSG causes more than headaches. Just say no to MSG. |

| some things are good in moderation and some not good at all. Consider this; MSG used sparingly shouldnt cause too much problems. However cumulatively speaking, over a course of several dishes it is probably a little too much. Bear in mind that tomatoes and cheeses have naturally occuring msg levels so a chinese meat based dish with tomatoes and then seasoned with MSG would most likely cause a sensory overload. MSG is also present in other foods, the biggest offender (IMHO) would have to be chicken booster powder. "Aji No Moto - contains no less than 99% pure MSG"

| A topic I am very hot on right now... I've been absent from the board for the last 48 hours because of a very severe migraine thanks to MSG! I think that the restaurant has an obligation to inform it's "eatership" that MSG is found in its foodstuffs -- especially when the restaurant has changed ownership (I knew -- so I thought-- that this place was OK--and it was, until it changed hands....) There are too many other ways to enhance foods without ading MSG--and more and more people out there are becoming increasingly sensitive!

| Lynne, How long did that headache last? I do think that consumer recognition of these matters is rising. So, your headache doesn't go without its upside. I'm sure you didn't feel that at the time. But, I thought it may make you feel a little better now. Nutritionpost |

| 72 hours of major nausea, pounding and sound sensitivity!!! The headache itself lasted another 24 hours- Rough to deal with when you've got to cook and serve breakfast! But it's gone...and I'll never go back there!

| Shroomgirl, It has always been my understanding that mushrooms are high in natural MSG. Do you have any problem with them? Not being argumentative because I hate the sh*t. Is my info wrong? Anybody know?

| Apparently it is even higher in tomato juice and even in breast milk. It occurs naturally in anything containing protein. (of course I'll have to check that with the biochemist when he wakes up..!) |
