Default Healthy food on a budget

For those that have a tight budget (or getting tighter with price increases) this is a good list of healthy food (under a buck).

Gosh, I don't see ramen noodles anywhere on the list! Oh, wait- you said "healthy"! I'm sure there's still plaque in my arteries from eating them while I was in college in the '70s.

Okay, here's a challenge: how many of these items can you combine into one dish? Here's the list again:
oats
eggs
kale
potatoes
apples
nuts
bananas
garbanzo beans
broccoli
watermelon
beets
butternut squash
whole grain pasta
sardines
spinach
tofu
lowfat milk
pumpkin seeds
coffee

I agree with most of it except I do think people should moderate the amount of eggs they eat (seeing as 2 have enough cholesterol for 3 days.) and I also think people don't realize that eating too much spinach isn't so great for your kidneys. It is very, very rich in vitamin K so I also think it's a good thing to moderate that too.
Other than that great list!

Sorry to be a spoiler here Luc but.......obviously this Divine Chick(s) is not shopping in the same stores we have to. Maybe it works for a bird style diet but not in this house. I mean we're not gluttonous but we do try to eat 3 squares a day

Not that we'd do it but lately it'd almost be cheaper to eat 4 days of meals a week fast food than try to fill the fresh veg or dry goods bins. Meats is a whole other story.

Mezz, Remove the sardines and I get a couple variations using 7, 5, 4, 3, 2. That's total items and not item listed in chronological order.

BTW and How do I say this....................that site is not really Men friendly and is expressed in the "About" link. They say they "Love us" but the site is not for us. Personally no problem for or from me but I certainly have no reason to go back so........ Later:surprise:

I don't think Luc was saying that this is all we should eat . . . just some things that are a good deal and healthy. Of course meat wouldn't fit into the category, since it's not a "thrifty" deal at all. I don't think anybody would want to live on only those ingredients in the list.

I wish I shopped wherever that person does. Wow, bananas for 19 cents per pound, wouldn't that be nice? Lately, they're 49-59 cents per pound here. Garbanzo beans at SavALot cost me upwards of $2 per can (fresh? I've never even seen!) and that's the cheapest grocery store in the area.

Thanks! That's the biggest issue I have with buying organic food as well, it's just so expensive. I'm moving into the country within the next year or so, right smack in the middle of farmland, and I can't wait to be able to buy produce right from the local farmers. My uncle's already up there and has a great relationship with a few of them already.

Hmmm funny that I did not get any e-mail alerts saying this thread had replies or I would have visited earlier...

Oldschool1982,
I think that maybe this list would be better approached as a list of foods that are cheap and healthy and, if they are not already in your pantry they should be considered.
Obviously prices vary per region.

Bundens, You are quite right about eating too much spinach. Spinach also locks calcium making it nutritionally unavailable. As for eggs, although they contain cholesterol, the link between bad blood cholesterol and egg consumption is not at all straightforward. (let's say it is debatable). The main reason is because eggs contain lecithin which buffers the absorption of cholesterol. All in all the link between dietary cholesterol and high cholesterol is weaker then genetic predisposition or lifestyle.
