Default cooked chicken in packets? where?

I take a backpacking trip in the sierras every summer and while the usual food staple is the trout we catch I'm looking for a product I saw once at ralphs and never saw again; cooked chicken in packets. Not cans. Packets. Stores sell tuna, salmon, and other fish in this sort of package but I can't find any d@m# chicken. I live in the Los Angeles CA area, specifically silverlake/Echo Park.

Does anyone know who carries this? OR,...can I order it? Online? Like we are now?

A good second choice would be freeze dried stuff. The main thing is weight, and schlepping as little as possible. I'm not lazy, but the trip in is about 6-7mi. with a 2500 ft increase in elevation.

If this post belongs in another area let me know. There isn't an "ingredient search" forum so I figured this one was best.

Tyson makes it - they are national hence a few calls to local markets may be quicker easier than visiting.

as it doesn't require refrigeration, etc., stores may stock it in a non-obvious spot... in the local Giant market the canned / foil stuff is right next to the spam and sardines <g>

note that this site lists it as a Corporate product - wonder if it is sold primarily to food service establishments vs. retail?

You should be able to find it at REI - the Rec Co-op. I'm sure they must have some stores in LA.

Nothing at REI. I contacted Tyson and the only stores that are selling it are hundreds of miles away, in states where I don't know anybody. And they don't ship to private buyers, understandably.

Does anyone other than Tyson make such a thing? Would be nice.

I know a guy with a shrink-wrapper thingy that he uses for his homemade jerky. Somehow I don't imagine it'd be cool w/ homemade cooked chicken but I've noticed there are some folks here with a background in science so please chime in if you could on the subject.

Thanks Mike & Dillbert for the posts. I'll probably double check both suggestions should I get a free minute before I go. Free time for me is getting to be a real trick as of lately.

Any Los Angelenos here that might know of a store with this elusive chicken product?

Sysco handles a cooked diced 60/40 diced chicken product.

Saw this at my local Food Lion today, both in the refrig section and next to the tuna/spam/etc. Either way it came out to $7.59/lb.

But if you want it that bad I'd be willing to ship you a few packs.

Since what you're asking about is the commercialization of the military MRE, you might find this satisfactory.
