Why not just wash your veggies in a sink full of water and two drops of bleach, then rinse?
No nasty salmonella or anything else.

Why do people have such a problem with this?

I agree with the washing part, but most stores will pull them if believed to be from that area.

I read that salmonella can penetrate the skin of the fruit/vegetable.

More irresponsible reporting.
Major damage was done to the tomato market, and now we are going to see further knee jerk reactions regarding jalapenos.

Because its cheaper, or at least thats the impression. Or maybe because some produce is only grown in countries other than the USA.

Because we built subdivisions on the farms here in the US.

Quite right. Spinach, tomato, jalapeño... what's next. Oh yes, only eat processed food. Hooray for McDonalds! (note sarcasm).

Well, if what you want is cheap, then you deserve what you get.

Jalapeños are grown in New Mexico and Texas.

Actually McDonalds would have little to do with it. More appropriate salutations would be to ConAgra, ADM, Cargil et al. Even so, they are users of the produce mentioned and it is of no use to them to have these problems in the food supply chain either.

Here is an example of why we get much of our products from abroad. Fintrac Inc.

US companies have invested money. They do this because production costs are lower. Pretty much the same reasoning behind sending many of the manufacturing jobs to overseas locations.

At the same time, I don't agree that USA produce doesn't have its own set of issues at times.

I think any issue with any Mexican product gets on the public radar faster than USA grown, even when USA products have problems.

Easy to blame the Mexican producers--but I won't forego their mangoes, yum! Nor any of their other produce unless I find good reason to.

Grow your own. I have jalapeños in the garden again this year and they are doing very well. And buy local is becoming much safer than factory farmed food.

Ah yes, those folks living in urban areas (most of us) should just start a vegetable garden in the living room. Sorry, but we've got large tract houses on almost no land in subdivisions named after the farms they obliterated and large urban areas with no local produce available. All of it is trucked these days and even those in outer areas are competing with the urban folks for the supply.
