Default Spain

I'm heading to Spain this summer. What food dishes are a must for me to try while I am there?

Thanks,
Candee

My time will be split between Madrid and the highlands of Soria, which is just south of the wine producing region of La Rioja. We are hoping to make it to Barcelona as well, but that isn't etched in stone yet.

I can only think to stay away from the larger restaurants and hotels and stick with the small regional restaurants or meet the people and eat with them to get a real feel for the area. Enjoy!

When you are in Madrid look up De Maria, it is not Spanish but Argentinian, it is very, very good indeed. The meat is butchered and cooked in an open kitchen and is some of the finest beef I have ever had. Pricey but well worth it. Highly reccomended.

Do try and get to Barcelona but avoid eating in Port Olypmic at the bottom of Las Ramblas it is very touristy and mostly rubbish. Instead try the side streets of the Gothic area, there are some interesting places to eat there. Be aware that this area is quite dodgy late at night.

Cool

I visited Barcelona and had one of the most memorable meals of my life - and that was in the fall of 1954 at the end of NATO naval exercises in the western Med.

It was Los Caracoles and I kind of think it is still around, since it was over 100 years old at the time I was there. I was told by a very sophisticated French lady (not connected with the restaurant) that it was considered one of the world's best restaurants. Be sure to order the snails.

Of course, the Jamon Iberico de Belotta.

Call El Bulli tomorrow morning and see if you can get a reservation. It seems to me a real shame to get as (relatively) close to it as you will and not have a shot at what's supposed to be a contemporary "best in the workd" meal.

By close, I mean on the same continent.

By the way, if you can pay the way for somebody to carry your bags on this trip, give me a call.

Mike.

thanks Mike! How can I pass up on the "best meal in the world"!? As far as someone to carry my bag...my bag has wheels!
