Being a female in the kitchen can be hard...their still are guys who don't like us in the kitchen. God forbid you have any talent because that's really a threat to that type of small minded guy.

It will never do you any good personally to play games with him, why bother messing with him. He's not worth the energy...I'd put my pans down nicely and just enjoy my day with my other co-workers.

Don't walk on egg shells but making a friend is always a better path.

Kitcnmomma, I have been in this kind of situation before. I have worked as linserver in Old Country Buffett in Atlanta, Georgia, and there were two co-workers of mine that didn't like me even though the managers really liked me. There was a fellow lineserver that yelled at me for every move I made. I tried to be patient and bear this for a while until she really got on my nerves because instead of doing her work, she was following me around with a bossy attitude and criticized everything I did, every move I made. I finally complained to the manager and he put her in a different position in the workplace so that she would leave me alone and I could get my work done. It wasn't fair because she was one of the workers who just stood around all day drinking soda and talking while I did everyone's work and she got paid for the work that I did. I felt cheated out of the money that was due to me. Another co-worker, one of the cooks, really hurt my feelings one day by yelling at me every time I drew the food out of the shaam to put them in the buffett for the people. I have a hearing problem and at first I didn't understand why he was yelling at me because I couldn't hear what he was saying to me. I finally mustered up enough courage to ask him what was wrong with him because I was only trying to do my work. He afterwards apologized to me for having treated me this way and was a close friend of mine from that time forward until I quit the buffett because I was overworked and I was still doing everyone's work and being underpaid.

Thumbs up

And by the way, let me add that I have NEVER gotten into trouble for anything at work. All my co-workers would always criticize me and try to get me into trouble, but instead got themselves into trouble. LOL everyone!!!

This guy sounds like a real jerk, but unfortunately, it seems that every kitchen has to have one. Usually, it is an older guy who has seen "kids" come and go and is usually bitter about his own inability to move on up the ladder (usually due to his attitude-a catch 22). Many times the FNG is thrown in with this person to see if they can hang. Yes, it is a test. In kitchens with a tight crew the new guy/girl is an outsider and they have to not only pass the chef's test but the cooks as well before being considered one of the team. The way to beat this guy is to show the rest of the crew that you can hang tough no matter what this a****** throws at you. As far as being a woman, if these guys are any good then the only thing they should care about is how well you can cook. To me, everyone, male and female, needs to prove themselves. And I refuse to make it any harder or any easier just because that person is a woman. Pass the test and your "in", fail the test and you are "out".

And now, as everyone knows, the General Manager where I work is always causing me problems. You can go check these articles out in the Late Night Cafe under the headings of "Update On My New Job" and the different parts of this story, as I don't want to make any one thread too long.
