| | Are you a picky eater? I know we're all foodies here, but I for one am a picky eater. I'm not especially picky in an annoying way and I probably will try everything but if I don't like something I will not eat it. Sof if I come to your house and you serve me something that I don't like then you might be offended if I push it aside... can't help it though, I'm picky.
Somethings I won't eat are fish (if I'm not in the mood), some kinds of cheese, and desserts with lots of nuts on them.
Any other picky adults around?

Let's roll out this old favorite...
I'm on a seafood diet. If I see food, I eat it.
But seriously, not really picky, but there is stuff I plain don't like. Quince is one, walnuts another. Veal I won't even think about - not wanting to start a veal debate, cuz after all I do eat cage chickens. Lamb's eyes would be out (unless I was a guest of honour and it would cause great resentment and was offered one and didn't eat it - would close my mind's eye end think of something else).
If there's something on a plate when I'm eating elsewhere that I really don't like, but I mess with it to look as if I attempted to eat it, out of good manners.
Hmm dog and cat would be out except in a survival situation, guinea pig too.

| | There are lots of things that I haven't experienced, and things that I don't like but wish I did - but nothing I wouldn't have a go at if someone had taken the time to present me with a meal.
I have wondered if those things I don't like, but wish I did, could be presented to me by an experienced chef in such a way as to re-educate my perceptions of these things. Is there a cut off age after which it's very difficult to relearn these kind of of preferences - or can a body always learn to like something given time? |

You would call me picky just because I hate chocolate milk but love chocolate ice cream? Because I hate cooked spinach but love a spinach salad? You must be crazed! I also fall into the hate/love catagory with creamed corn...ugh! (actually, any vegetable that's creamed.) Give me corn on the cob! If it comes from water, fresh or sea, forget it...but I do like Alaskan king crab legs and while in Thailand I tried fish balls. They weren't too bad. Raw cauliflower is great, just don't cook it and I'll eat it. Same with cabbage. Bush the first got it wrong however. Broccoli is loved cooked or raw! Carrots raw are best but if I have to eat them cooked I can...barely. There is only one vegetable that I can think of that I hate no matter what. Brussel sprouts. Blaaa! Makes me shudder just looking at them. Now I live in a country that eats horse meat. That's one thing I'll never know if I like or dislike. All I can think of is Mr. Ed. |

To me, a picky eater is one who will not eat certain foodstuffs out of untested bias. A friend of mine's wife, for instance, has a long list of things she just won't eat. On examination it turns out she's also never tried most of them. I'm not talking about exotic things, but everyday food products.
My daughter-in-law is the same way. She just won't consider even tasting foods that she's decided---based on nothing---that she won't eat. And the list of such foodstuffs is long indeed.
On the other hand, if you've given something a fair trial, and don't care for it, that's not being picky. That's just deciding what you do and do not like. And why would anyone with the brains God gave a turnip choose to eat food they honestly didn't care for?
In my case, for instance, I don't normally eat soft tissues except for liver. I've tried them many times, prepared by a diversity of cooks, and they're not my thing. But, if I were at a dinner party and they set, say, sweetbreads before me, would I eat them? You betcha! I might not like them, but I wouldn't insult my host either.
Like everyone else I certainly have food biases. But I like to think that there's a rational reason behind each one, rather than just a knee-jerk "I don't eat that!" |

I have my preferences, like I'm not a huge fan of green bell peppers ( I think they should be used in a sachet for flavor and then discarded, lol).
But I will not purposely pick all of the GBP's out of my dish, I may just leave a few pieces uneaten.
My wife is different.
She decides instantly what items on her plate she won't eat, and then has to physically move them to a side plate, instead of just eating around them.
But then, when I met her, she wouldn't eat oyster crackers because she didn't like seafood, and thought chik-o-stix candy was wierd, because who would make candy with poultry?

| | There is practically nothing i won't eat because it's prepared badly. I love to eat what i haven;t cooked. (So please, don;t do like so many of my friends do, they don;t invite me to supper because they;re afraid i won't eat stuff that they cook! You can always invite me to supper!)
There are just a few things i don;t like,like i have a big prejudice against organs of waste (kidneys, intestine, stomach) which i've never tried, and though i dislike practically anythning boiled in tomato sauce, i will generally eat it, if i have some bread with it and can salt it as i like. Oh, and i really really dislike fresh cilantro.

Do I dislike anything ? Not very much.
But there are a few things I have tried and will not subject my sensory glands to be seduced into eating them again. Case in point, turtle soup, sheep testicles, conch soup, the colorful green slime in a lobster, yet I love pig's feet slow cooked in pickling spices. Now your all going to hate me for this one, I love foie gras (no matter what people say), and I hate chicken livers. My mom would tell us we were going to have a roast dinner for supper, no problem, but when she would say that we were eating rump roast, out it came.
Peas.....ummmm, I love frozen peas but hate canned. (unless in a gravy with yorkshire pudding).
Coconut, it must be fresh or don't bring it near me.
Don't serve me flowers because they belong in a garden.
Have I said too much ?

| | I had a roommate who would only eat plain hamburgers, pizza or spaghetti and that's it. Whenever I would make something he would say wow that smells good what is is? my reply would be for example Kung Pao Chicken and I would say go grab a fork and a plate and I will give you some and his reply would always be no thanks I don't like it. Didn't matter if myself or anyone was cooking he would not even try.
I will try anything once, sometimes I really regretted it and most the time i have enjoyed it or was happy that I tried it. |

| | I'm a little bit picky, there's still products I don't -dare- to eat after trying it once and "BLECH!" over it. Like chives, or certain other vegetables. I also don't like chili sauce because of that. :P
