I did not mean to sell it short...Montreal is a beautiful city with lots of great food, including some marvelous Indian Restaurants. I once lived not far away, on the stateside, in VT. My wife and I took frequent forrays into Quebec when I was teaching at NECI.

Kimmie, perhaps you could organize a Slow Food Dinner at one of those fabulous Indian restaurants... Mysore, bombay palace, what's best do you think?

Peace,
kmf

They change all the time (I mean the Indian restaurants). All of them, without exception, lack consistency. I don't know if Indian chefs are moody or something but you can have a wonderful meal one day and next time, they may poison you! I know some people who got food poisoning!

I stopped eating at Bombay Palace years ago! Can you tell me more about Mysore?

I wear my sari and cook Indian at home!

BTW, what's NECI stand for?

I also fondly remember the food in Montreal. I went there with my family several times, as a child. And also stayed there on my honeymoon. I remember a dish we had for breakfast, which was like a turnover with a spicy fruit sauce on top. It was really good. What was it? Of all the places to eat, the huge buffet at the Place Villa Marie (sp) shopping mall stays in my memory!

I loved the food in Montreal, even the fries with cheese and gravy. We stayed in a great place right by the port (warehouse converted to an Inn). I remember a wonderful restaurant in the historic (?) part that served great Borscht, and vodkas that matched different foods..one was very grassy tasting but good.

We also stayed in Quebec City (the old part - walled) at Chateau Frontenac...and had great meals there too..two restaurants we enjoyed were The Canadian..and Cafe Dumond.

Both of those places are beautiful Kimmie.

Hmm

Dear SeattleDeb and Jeni:

I think Quebec City is "hot" right now as far as restaurants are concerned.

Montreal has seen better days. I don't mean to say it's not a great food city anymore but the really good places are fewer in number.

Jeni: I work in Place Ville-Marie. Have you seen Moevenpick?

SeattleDeb: Was the inn called Bonaparte, by any wonderful chance? and might you have had the Borscht and Vodka at Stash?

At Château Frontenac, in Quebec City, the chef was Jean Soulard. I don't know if he's still there. I have a few recipes from him.
Great chef!

Kimmie...I can't remember the restaurant name, only that it was ethnic

We stayed at the Auberge du Vieux-Port facing the river. Great breakfasts. www.aubergeduvieuxport.com

SeattleDeb:

I think you were at Stash's Restaurant. It's the only one I can think of who serves Borscht.

I know Auberge du Vieux Port. Hope you enjoyed it.

Here's Auberge/Restaurant Bonaparte. Their website is www.bonaparte.com

and don't skip their intro...you'll know what I mean upon your visit!

You ABSOLUTELY MUST let me know, whenever you plan to come to Montreal!

On vacations we're walkers/explorers..we must've walked right by that Inn on our way to the Basilica...had to rerun the intro because I had my speakers turned off! Very nice.

Absolutely loved that trip...we started in upstate NY, went to Montreal, Quebec, VT, ME, NH, MA, ending back in NY...ran out of time as usual.

It's so typical isn't it, to run out of time that is. Holidays always seem too short!

Glad you enjoyed the website. I'm right around the corner!

My reply disappeared! Gee, I'm surprised Place Villa-Marie is still there! I was there in the 70s. Being 12 or 13 at the time, no matter how fine the restaurant we went to, my cousins and I kept ordering hamburgers and fries. When I was there on my Honeymoon, I spent most of my time shopping alone, or ordering room service at the Holiday Inn, while my new husband got our car fixed. What a mess! Thank goodness he spoke French!

I forgot to say; Aside from the hamburgers and fries, the breakfasts were really great. There were assortments of all kinds of fresh fruits, pastries, and Belgian waffles, among many others. We weren't used to such elaborate breakfasts. I have yet to find pastries like I had in Montreal. Do they still have that buffet at the Place Villa Marie? We started our trip in Clayton, NY, at the 1000 Islands. What a great boat ride!

Jeni and SeattleDeb,

I just opened a thread under <Montreal and Food> in Cook's Corner.

In all fairness to Kurt...
