| Wait a minute -- doesn't that mean that to fly them you have to be in the Midwest??? Just kidding! ![]() |

| No, you just have to be flying TO the midwest, I believe. I've flown from Newark to Omaha a couple times on Midwest for business -- I think they may be a bit more expensive than other airlines, but then again, I didn't pay for the flight, my company did . Most(if not all) of their flights are direct also -- no stops. |

| I would be a lie to say I have fond memories of airplane meals. On the other hand train food, in first class, is very good. They serve fancier food than airlines. I remember a salmon fillet with vegetables julienne served with a nice wine glass or two. A nice selection of chocolate for dessert. I was told that to eat well in airplanes you want to call ahead and say you eat kosher or vegetarian.

| Don't ask for kosher Isa! I've heard pretty bad things about airlines' kosher meals.

| Tough, salty brisket; grey vegetables; the dreaded MARGARINE. My sister, who doesn't keep kosher, always used to ask for kosher meals just because at one time it WAS more dependable. But not now! Oh, she tried vegetarian, too. Take my word for it. DON'T. I assume you were talking about the food on Canadian trains. Amtrak dining-car food is actually not bad -- at least it's freshly cooked -- but it's no gourmet tap-dance. More like a decent "family restaurant." Note that I say "dining-car" NOT dinette or cafe car. What they serve in those is not food (except the Smartfood popcorn ).Ever since I read the piece by Calvin Trillin in Alice, Let's Eat titled "Fly Frills to Miami," I've loved the idea of brown-bagging it on a flight whenever possible. Of course, it's a terrible shame that airPORT food is so dreadful... But that's for another thread, perhaps ![]() |

| Kinda makes sense to take your own food. I mean, I bring food for the kids so why torture myself eating the airplane stuff. It all can fit in the same diapy bag. ![]()

| The best airplane meal I ever had (back before I developed food allergies): Hero sandwich Piece of fresh fruit Candy bar Bag of chips Can of soda Nothing had to be cooked, everything was fresh. It was a no-brainer and just about impossible to screw up. Proving once again the value of the principle of KISS (keep it simple stupid). Since developing the food allergies I bring my own goodies to eat if the flight is fairly long. |

| I remembered when my parents have to fly, they always pack their own food. I used to laugh at them, especially my mom, for bringing so much food. But now I see why..... ![]() |

| When I'm not able to fly Midwest Express, I take individually wrapped string cheese sticks, sunflower kernels (unsalted), carrot and celery sticks and a high-fiber cracker like Kavli or FiberRich. Fills those rumbling corners of the tummy without eating junk. I second Suzanne's assessment of airline kosher food. Due to halachic restrictions, meat must be salted and soaked- then cooked to DEATH to remove any trace of blood (AKA juice). Unless lots of good flavors are added, it's not very palatable. I had a vegetarian meal once, too- it was greasy and almost completely starchy veggies cooked almost to mush. I'd rather bring my own and choose fruit or whatever is edible from the offerings.

| Vegetarian food it is, if I ever set foot in another plane. I hate flying. Yes that was Canadian train Suzanne.

| Sadly, none of the flights I take are long enough to warrant more than 5 ounces of liquid (I'm estimating here) and a tiny bag of snackies. I usually take US Air which is pretty stingy, but recently I took Southwestern and they handed out Lorna Doones and offered seconds on drinks. The one time I went abroad on Sabena about 5 years ago, I remember thinking the food was yummy but I can't remember what it was now. |
