I would be a liar if I said I didn't like praise, 'cause I DO!

When I try a new recipe and hear hubby's grunts following his first bite, it makes me happy

You want to be a little modest and not pushy, but I always have to ask people how they like the food.
It's a good ego stroke.

There are two levels at work. I think we all live for the "Ooh, Aah!" We are exhibitionists at heart I also think we like to please people, not in the obsequious, sycophant, toady sense. We like to do things that make people happy. The oohs and aahs are our confirmation that we have succeeded.

I am not a pro cook but I always love compliments and comments when I cook for friends and family. My mother is the same way. You have to make some kind of comment or she is hurt.
It is an interesting twist to be going to cooking school now and getting comments from people who are professionals at food. I respect all their opinions and comments.

Of course I am still my own worst critic and like a post I saw earlier; even if someone raves over my food, if I don't think it came out well, the compliments don't mean much.

My opinion,
I never trust compliments,. I can't tell if people are telling the truth, or being nice, or if they just have bad taste(if my food turns out bad and they still say its great)....That is one of my biggest pet peaves. When i screw up on food and people say it was so good. rrrrrrr. I always wanna go on about what could have been better and bla bla. I made potatoe croquets a week ago for a lot of my family and by the time we ate them, they were SOGGY SOGGY...and everyone was saying they were so good. I was disgusted. I'm sure i need to get out of this mindset and do the "i'm glad you liked it". By the way, i'm only 17 if that makes any difference. maybe its a maturity thing. or lack thereof

Ron,
That mind set is not a maturity thing, it's a perfection thing. I don't think we're trading the "I hoped you like it" for perfection. You're participating in a culinary art, perfection is the eye of the beholder. Your tastes may vary from you diners, they might not be blowing smoke when they tell you that. Compliments, whether candid, polite, professional, sarcastic, honest, rude are just compliments.
Gosh, you're 17, and I'm sounding like an old man.
Just keep on cookin!!!!!
PS I have on a few occasions, dined on dishes prepared by very well known chefs and when I looked and tasted, the only thing I could think of is WHAT WAS HE OR SHE THINKING! Same goes for wine. I sit there while everybody raves about the food and wine all the time thinking the whole kitchen has had a car accident and the buss boys and valet are in the kitchen preparing this crap.
