What is the name of the guy who fell on his own sword because a fish delivery was late?

That was Chef Francois Vatel, and the incident happened in 1671, when he was supposed to feed the entourage of King Louis XIV while in the employ of the Prince of Conde. Only part of his shipment of fish arrived. Story goes, though, that soon after his body was found the rest of the fish arrived.

Yeah, but HIS stress was over. Think of the pour sous' stress!

Late and missing food shipments. The bane of my cooking existence. NOTHING I do eliminates them. There was at least one time, around 1 a.m. on an important catering gig in the middle of nowhere, when I wondered if the French Foreign Legion took old, fat guys. Slipping out of town and into a new identity seemed just the thing at the time.
