Today, those cheeses are made all over the world. Parmesan originated in the Parma region of Italy and Romano, near Rome. Roquefort is ancient (dating back to the days of Charlemagne), aged in moutain caverns near the village of Roquefort in southern France. Cheddar is named after the town in Somerset, England where it originated. Most cheeses are named in the same fashion (Emmenthal, Brie, Gruyere), sometimes even being named after a bridge in a particular town (ie. Pont l'Eveque.) Wines, I'm not so sure about as I can't drink them, but my hunch is that Johannesburg Reisling is named after a city ( I think in Alsace?) |
