Anneke:

Yes there are Buffalo Flies:

"BUFFALO FLY CONTROL

Brian Radunz, Veterinary Officer

Every year, mainly during the wet season and early dry season, thousands of cattle in the northern half of the Northern Territory are attacked by buffalo flies. Buffalo flies are regarded as a problem by cattle producers. There is considerable debate if there is loss of production caused by buffalo flies in brahman cattle. Loss of production would be expected due to irritation caused by the biting flies and there are certainly animal welfare considerations."

And Buffalo wings did orignate in Buffalo NY.

i think with references to local cuisines, you will find that local adaptations and attributes will in turn name the dish as such.

i.e. russian tea is tea served in the russian style from a samovar, just like arabian tea has mint (just because the local inhabitants like their variants, doesnt mean that particular dish originates from that area)

a very good example is of the Irish and their legendary love of potatoes.

This is a restaurant chain, not an actual food. "Boston Pizza". The company was created in the 1970's in Edmonton, Alberta.

"Armadillo Eggs" or as they call them at the Grand Hotel in Kelowna "Ogopogo Eggs" are not actually eggs, they are breaded deep fried Jalepenos.
