Yawn Cinema Snacks

I was reading through the popcorn thread in the nutrion forum, and I just had to ask, why do the theatres charge so much for food, especially popcorn ?. I mean it's not like they have an extremely high food cost.

***Because they can***

I want to know, is it more annoying if you get cheaper tickets (like at a matinee or you got a special deal) - how expensive the popcorn is, or is it equally annoying as if you pay more for the tickets?

I.e. is the relative percentage of total cost an issue or only the $ amount in absolute terms?

(I suppose a variation on this is: is it more annoying if the popcorn costs $5 and the service person is unfriendly as if they are friendly to you? Or would it be equally annoying irrespective of service?)

Does it help if they offer free refills? Only if you actually avail yourself of them?

Sorry if I made this too complicated. I really do wonder about these things
I'm afraid.

Theaters actually make most of their money on the popcorn because they get very little if anything from the movie ticket sales, it all goes to the movie producer........ In spite of that I am the queen of sneaking food into the theater..... Nobody looks twice at the backpack I wear, large enough to fit plenty of treats..........

OneSock, did you try to call me this early afternoon (just before 1 your time) because someone from New York called when I was out...

Probably not you though . You probably would have left a message, huh? No message of consequence (one of those 2 seconds, no words ones)

So since you evidently know about this stuff...if you have enough snacks to last, is it ok to site through two showings (or more) once you've paid once to go in?

I kind of want to see Shrek again but I don't think this would work since I exited the theater inbetween the first and second showing...

Any thoughts on that?

Sneaking in to see a second film was fun the first time as a teenager, but beyond that, I have ethical issues. I think anyone who's ever tried to run a business would. (Plus that's a really long time to sit on my butt!)It's still theft. As for margins, I heard they make the most money on soft drinks, not popcorn, as do the major fast food chains. From what I read, cinemas aren't really making all that much money. COnsidering what most cinemas had to invest to get tose super-comfortable new seats, I'm happy to pay the price. Heck, I'll pay the price for a good movie anyday. Too bad there aren't too many of those nowadays... There's always the video store!

Hello foodisme! I did not call you, but had I certainly I would have left a message!!!! Sneaking into a movie is fine.... we have two rules 1) It must be a rainy day(so we have an excuse for spending so much time in a movie theater) 2) It has to be at a big theater, like UA... we need the money for the second show more then they do! In fact with the way our checkbook looks at the moment it may be unethical for them to charge us for the first show! Iza.... I agree, theater popcorn is really good, but I find if I sneak in say a forbidden box of chocolate covered doughnuts I quickly forget about the popcorn LOL!!!

I don't mind the price for popcorn, it's the $5 for a tiny box of Jr. mints.

In NJ a lot of drug stores, especially Drug Emporium, sell the large boxes of cinema candies for as low as 79 cents. There is a huge store in Mercer Mall located right next to a multiplex theater that sells tons of candy to movie goers. I always bring my own bottled water (89 cents) versus $2.00 at the theater. And, since I do not trust the quality of the popcorn I make my own and bring it. It costs only pennies at home.

I like to make a game of sneaking snacks into the movies. Haven't tried fitting in a bucket-o-popcorn ever, but I don't like the stuff.

An interesting story- when my Mom was young, her great-grandma (my great-great-grandma) would pack sliced turnips for them to munch on at the movies. Kind of like popcorn, you know? Well... kind of....

OneSockChef,

Never thought of donuts. I always try to bring in healthy snacks. I'll really have to change my ways.

Thanks for the cool Gremlins! I hope this works or I'm going to be editing this post forever.

Re: movie theater snacks: I typically make great popcorn in my whirlypop - then watch pay per view.

only one edit...not bad for a new trick
