im not terribly fond of tv chefs.

It probably comes from watching the credits and working out that most tv chefs will have atleast one master chef overseeing the production and ensuring that the star doesnt end up looking like the proverbial goose and not the pretty person that is easy on the eye.

After all, we all have to own up to our mistakes in real life.

I agree Nick. My father is obsessive about the Food Network. As I watch some of the shows, the chefs make mistakes, and since I am by far not a chef, I wonder if it is noticeable to others. I have seen Emeril make a lot, but he still has a charisma that just draws people in. I think they are good for the industry, but people should understand their role in the industry.

I must admit though, I think Jamie O. is a cutie along with that Tyler Florence!!

I love Emeril. I think he has had a great influence on my attitude about cooking by showing how much fun it can be. I began cooking by force to earn a paycheck when I was widowed. I went from hating it to loving to do it non-stop It has become my means of making a living as well as a hobby.

Jeff Smith "The Frugal Gourmet" was a great show. He knew how to talk to you, as you were cooking in the kitchen. He gave good history info on whatever particular dish he was preparing. I enjoyed watching it in the morning before heading off to school.

My No 1 is Julia forever. Jacques Pepin is a close second. Put them together and it's wonderful. There's genuine affection there, indeed!

Then, I really like watching Ruth Rodgers and Rose Gray (The Italian Kitchen series).

Can't stand Emeril! Don't know Flay (don't get Food Network remember!) Don't get me wrong. I think Emeril is wonderful with food. He's just not good as TV-Chef. Hate his bamming!

Saw Michael Lomonaco (once with Julia, once with Tom Snyder...long long time ago!) and he made me happy. Ran at the store and bought "The 21 Club" cookbook.

I do agree with Snakelady 1 concerning Jeff Smith (The Frugal Gourmet). Lots of history, lots of cooking. I recorded his shows and I still enjoy them.

I watch them all. I have learned much and been inspired by the TV Chefs. Used to enjoy Nathalie DuPree's cooking show on PBS, several years ago. It was all Southern cooking. I found an interesting cooking show on the satellite, called The Urban Peasant.

The Frugal Gourmet used to drive me nuts. He mispronounced just about everything and made generalizations about people's cultures based on two or three dishes. Some of his stuff was really good, but I couldn't get past his manner. Sad about the reason he is no longer on the air, too.

I've gotten tired of Emeril so I don't watch him any more. It seems like whenever I turn on FoodTV...there he is! I agree that he has gotten people interested in food who may not have otherwise though. My favorite is Alton Brown of Good Eats. I really liked the episode that was a takeoff on The Blair Witch Project.

I like any cook/chef that does authentic dishes and does them well so I don't necessarily care for "star" chefs who think they know what they're dong (such as claiming to cook german food just because they put sauerkraut on everything). Bobby Flay is one of my least faves because I just don't like the guy although his recipes are good. I do like Emeril because he is entertaining and does have some really good recipes. Ming Tsai is good, has good recipes, but they're way too involved and extensive for me. I love to cook and don't mind spending time on a recipe but also don't want to have to buy 10 jars of spices that I will never use again.
I have actually made tamales from scratch but I think Peking Duck is out of the question for me.
I like Julia Child, the cooking is "real", I don't like Graham Kerr and I do like the "Naked Chef". One of my faves these days is Alton Brown of "Good Eats". He has good recipes and I do enjoy all the info he has to share.
