I've been searching for the better part of the past hour, and i cant seem to find what i'm looking.

I want to know what a good first chefs knife would be, and i don't exactly know what forum to post it in.

I would ask in the culinary student's forum, or if you dare, professional's forum. Actually there's a thread in the pro forum about knives and such.

The best thing you can do is actually go to the main cheftalk.com page and use the search there. I did just that and searched for "chef knives" and found over 5 articles. I think the one you want is this:

I would advise you go to a market/store that has the most commonly available brands and find out what is the most comfortable in your hand.

Once you know what you like in a knife, look on eBay.

All of my knives where made 60+ years ago, and I have less than $500.00 invested.
in a 15 oiece knifeset.

It has taken nearly ten years to collect the knives I use daily, and in the interim I made do with sub standard/lesser quality knives.

This has only served to make me appreciate the quality of a vintage steel knife and the work that goes into a forged blade all the more.
