So glad you had a good time, other than the bugs.
For starters, they won't be quite as bad come October. But, even so, you don't need any if you react that way.
I make a bug repellent that seems to work for most people. It's a balm, made from pennyroyal---a natural bug repellent in the mint family. Once the balm is complete I stir in several drops of citronella essential oil.
Between those two active ingredients not many bugs are interested.
Among commercial products, Deet is the most effective anti-bug compound. But it has, unfortunately, been used incorrectly. According to studies done by the U.S. Army, a 35% concentration is the most effective. The stuff becomes less effiecient if you go down or up from there. Meaning that those products touted as 100% deet are expensive, but don't do a particularly good job.
Neem oil is, like Avon Skin So Soft, one of those products that works with individual body chemistry. For many people it is an effective bug repellent. But for just as many others it doesn't work at all. Those for whom it works swear by it. Those for whom it doesn't work swear at it. And they're both right. |
