Edelweiss- a German beer brewed by the Schneiderweisse brewery.

Now, if I knew for a fact that Cape would be the next to post, I would've figured out something that began and ended with "e"! As it stands, next up is "s"

Sonoma! - one of the three best-known - though not necessarily the best - wine regions in California.

Edelfaule . . .

German name for the mold Botrytis cinerea, the "noble rot" that produces those wonderful beerenausleses and trockenbeerenausleses.

Didn't mean to imply earlier that I don't like Sonoma wines - I do, I honestly do. I just like Alexander Valley, and especially Silver Oak, better.

And, oh yes - that would leave another "e"!

Well, this works out well. Pooh and Cape posted at about the same time, but pooh is the winner by a hair, so-

Napa- another of the big-three wine regions of California.

And the next letter is "a", so Cape gets to see his last letter used, as well!

"allocate"

This is one of the ways the industry dictates who gets what, and how much.

In other words..many high end wines are carfully distibuted to houses with a proven track record.Dick mentions Silver Oak..One of my favorite wines,be it Napa or Alexandra valley. Yet 15 years ago you could be pretty sure that you could purchase this wine in many locations at a Consumer freindly price point (although never cheap) it was in the pipeline and assesible. Now it is in very high demand and very limited...so if you buy 50 cs of wine XYZ maybe the distibutor will float you a couple cases.
Because of this technique you will always see these wines at a premium.
Dick...does that make sense?

Egri Bikaver . . . meaning "Bull's Blood of Eger" - probably the best-known Hungarian red wine and one of the first wines I came to know and like over 30 years ago. It seems a little flat and insipid to me now, but I loved it (and the price) then.

BMS/Chef - yes, allocate - good word and good explanation. Maybe the best (worst, depending on your point of view) example is what DRC does in Burgundy - if you want one bottle of Romanee-Conti you've gotta buy a whole case of wine from their (maybe good, maybe not) other properties for a total price in the thousands for a single case of wine. Heck, that could buy a lifetime supply of Egri Bikaver.

"r" to the next person.
